I am also a little surprised so many free feed. I had always heard that dogs would eat whatever is in front of them no matter how much food they had. I feed at night around 9:00 or later, this allows him time to digest his food before the morning hunts.

Here in nebraska thats the only way to hunt when its below freezing and wind blowing otherwise you won't get a shot off, those birds will be out 80 yards in front. Last weekend was the coldest so far out of the season and it was a good one. hoping this weekend will get as cold. Week and half left of...

He points great at times when they stay put for instance this weekend he had several great points that held tight and others were we had them running and he pushed them up. He understands come and whoa until he is hot on a trail then it is diffecult to slow him down. I would say from this weekend, 1...

Beratta Pintail ES100. love this gun. had a Nova, but had to get an automatic gun. Would love to get the Montefello by Bennilli, now that is the lightest gun ever.

I also switched to Black Gold on Friday. The dog seems to really like it and from what I can tell less c**p to clean up. I will have to try the hot water thing, sounds like a good idea in this cold weather.

GSP help!

I have a 4 year old GSP and has an outstanding nose, but my problem, at least I think it is a problem, maybe not, he will get on a bird and take off running after it and get too far ahead and kick the bird (pheasant) up before we are in range to shoot. What can I do to keep him on the bird trial but...

Wow, thanks for all the help, this really makes it easy to make my decsion. The poll that was done earlier on this website talked about the different brands of dog food and I noticed no one selected Pedagree so I figured it must not be a good source of dog food. I had no idea that corn was not a goo...

So do you think Pedagree is a good product to use or should I switch. I believe the protein is 26% and 11% fat. I would also add that my dog is a little overweight so should I be worried about the fat content?

feeding your dog

I have heard that during hunting season when your dog is going to be active you should change dog food to the best and most expensive? Is this a good idea to be changing dog food or is that a myth about changing food being hard on a dog? I have used Pedagree my dogs whole life, should I switch?

This may be a dumb question but what do you mean by "getting the hips checked" on a GSP

Dog ready for hunting

Sounds like you are training a pitbull. Endurance and cardio is what is important not so much muscle mass, I would think that would be hard on a dog.

Gun Shy

I would say get him around some birds and hunting again. I wouldn't just shoot my gun around him and expect him not to hear it. Put the dog in an enviroment he love, which is hunting, when the bird comes up shoot, he will never know and he is back to new.

GPS Ranging

EZZY True, I would agree with you on that. The stuff we like to hunt is CRP grass about up to our chest. Most of the time I let him go where he wishes (left right) as far as he wants just as long as he has someone in front. I don't think I have ever seen a GSP get out in front lets say over 100 yds ...

GPS Ranging

I like to have my GSP with in gun range, here in Nebraska nothing really sits tight unless it is 20 below with winds. If he gets out in front too far I have a beeper with a beeper on it that I can sound and he knows to stop and come back. too far infront and all he will do is run the birds up and out.
