Natty light, missing lost ones and looking forward to hunting in the morning in fresh snow. Maybe the pheasants will hold tommorrow for me!

I trial and bird hunt. heck of a way to spend your off season while all the pure bird hunters are sitting around watching football. Seems to be a good way to keep the dogs busy when bird season is a short one. May I ask what you do to keep your dog sharp the other 10 months of the year?

I have shot lots of pheasants with a .410, a 28 can do the job. You have to be a better shot though. Try a full choke.

WIth all the talk saying " just put 3 birds in a field, run all these dogs together and find out who was best" this only creates another venue. It does nothing to level the playing field to find the best dog. I have hunted behind AA, HB, Walking, NSTRA, Navda, UBH, etc dogs and as title of this thre...

There is some good walk in ground down by Osage city, look on your map and you can find them. I wouldnt head west of Topeka because of the city boys blasting and pressuring birds. Its to easy for them to take I-70 to get to those places

Have you ever hunted via horseback? You can close the gap quick. Pheasants here in Ks will hold, even those late season roosters if you have a good enough dog to hold them.

The best answer is, GO WATCH ONE. Dont watch some guys dog that "says" this is an AA dog. Go with someone that does it, that has placements with their dogs, and you WILL know the difference within a matter of seconds.

SmokinJoe is right, you need more whoa. The dog doesnt understand what is being asked of him because he hasnt been taught. You need to get the dog steady on whoa before anything else. He is young though and you have recieved good info about letting the dog go for a bit and put some age on him.

Nothing can replace a bird in training while giving you the same results. You stated that the dog will have been on birds before you start this so you must have access, so stick with the real deal.

I dont see any reason not to hunt your "trial" dog, the handler is in charge of the outcome and wild birds make dogs not pen raised. With a competent handler it doesnt matter if the birds are wild or pen raised, although wild birds can teach so much more than a pen raised.

They're half hour braces. If you're worried, the dog isn't in proper condition. If you do get 90 minutes down time, get the dog up and moving 15/20 minutes before you go. I'd prefer back to back, maybe 5-10 minutes max between. +1 If the dog is properly conditioned it shouldnt be a problem at all. ...
