If you want a close working German shorthair it defeats the purpose of a pointing dog..... a lab can work great and it won't range. Ridiculous. A dog needs to range at whatever is the most efficient "harvest range". Not all dogs are capable of adjusting. Big running dogs on Chukar should shorten up...

This is Minnesota not Antarctica. An EP will be fine in MN. I live and hunt in MN with a shorthair that has a coat that is more EP-like than GSP-like. She does fine and I will quit in cold weather before she does. Dogs generate body heat by running and hunting and that'll keep any dog plenty warm. ...

We have had weather over 32 this week. Still 20 inches of snow. 2.5 feet of ice on the lakes, but the geese have started arriving, and I've been hearing birds in the morning. Spring is coming....slowly.

Make sure she is fully broke. A lab flushing birds in front of her points could cause her to break before she should.

When I spoke of young I meant a dog into its 2nd or 3 rd year. What is nice about a snowmobile is that it allows me to get down the prairie trails where no one else can hunt. Many times the birds haven't seen hunters in 2-4 weeks. It also allows for good coyote hunting.

Ruffs and Late season pheasants. They really require a dog to be on the ball. No mistakes are tolerated. Wood cock are the best for young dogs.

I agree, if there was ever a perfect place for an EP, West Texas is it. Not to say a GSP wouldn't be great as well. As far as endurance goes, that won't be an issue with a well exercised dog.
