Do you really need someone to tell you want to do. Don't let the pup out till you catch the bird.
Then stop letting the dog mess with clipped wing birds.

Re: "Kennel" dog as house dog
It depends on the dog, if its a clean kennel dog it will probably be easy. I have a setter that I brought in the house that lived the first 1.5 years in a kennel and I can count the accidents he had on one hand (and not use all those fingers). The whole trick is to treat him like a puppy, put him in...

Couldn't agree more! I think way too much pressure gets put on, "true" Derbies to be competitive against dogs that should be first year or second year adult dogs.

Just from what I have seen with my limited exposure. An All Age AKC dogs is equivalent in Range to an AF shooting dog. That is just what I have seen at trials in and around PA area. Many of the dogs I have seen run AKC Gun dogs were big foot hunting dogs in my opinion (not all, a few could really mo...

Its really up to you! You will have the easiest time finding an English setter that has been trialed for grouse simply because they are popular in your area in the cover dog stakes. I have setters and really like them as grouse dogs but that's because I really like them, not because that they are su...

Are you talking AF or AKC trials? If so, and you want to make the breaking process the easiest for yourself and the dog (less pressure). Do not allow the dog to retrieve. I'm not saying you can't do both just saying its easier to break a dog that has never been allowed to retrieve shot birds. When t...

Like other said, don't compare to other dogs, they all mature differently! let her mature and get her around as many wild birds as possible, if you only option is pen raised birds find a training group, they will usually let you come and work with them for very little at first.

I want as little food in my dogs belly when I run/hunt him as possible. They run better and are safer(no chance of flipping stomach) with an empty stomach. If the dog free feeds you don't know when he has a full belly. Just my thoughts on the matter.

Go to some trials and talk to people, most trial people are willing to help a great deal and you may hook up with people in your area! Go ahead and run you puppy, not much is expected of a pup so you have little risk of doing any harm, it will give people a chance to see you as well.

You need to stop hunting them together and take a few steps back with younger dog. When she "weaved" at the shot she was telling you that you were moving to fast. Take a step back with her and reintroduce the gun from a distance with a helper and slowly move in as she chases the bird. If you keep go...

I would avoid the birds right now, you would probably just get him to associate birds and guns as bad. Do what other people suggested and leave it next to his food, make it a com...
