As you might know, the latest advice on glycogen replacement suggests serving it in water (no food) within 15 minutes of the end of a hunt. I'm good with that, but some times my guys simply won't drink it. I can't imagine what it tastes like, and probably can sympathize. I'm thinking of adding some ...

Re: A little different question on boots
I own 21 pairs of boots. Companies give them to me hoping I'll use them on my show, I buy some, and I have some custom-fitted for me. Out of all of this I've learned one important fact: fit is as important in boots as in shotguns. Buy a good pair but ensure they are fitted by an expert. Wear the sam...

Doggie first aid
As most of you know, I've been contracted by Skyhorse Publishing to write a book on what dogs teach us (I'm thoroughly unqualified to do the opposite). I'm including a section on skills a bird hunter should have, as you know. That might include essential dog first aid fixes. What are the most common...

Hi everyone, long time no talk. Busy writing shows. Shooting straight ... check. Bird-finding savvy ... got it. But how about those woods-wise, outdoorsy skills that make a hunt more effective or enjoyable. Or that could save your life. Scott, a little insight: The last thing any retriever org. wants is any association or direct affiliation with "rubber ducks." HRC doesn't use flyers (live birds) in their hunt tests, and they've been criticized for that since their motto is something like "By hunters, for hunters" and hunters of co...

My sled dog competitor friends use peanut butter...natural peanut butter without the chemicals. They claim studies have shown that it activtes in 20 minutes and because of the formulation doesn't cause 'spiking" but a gradual energy surge. Easy to carry... And hilarious to watch them eat, I'll bet.

I'm liking a certain new dog food, 33% protein (chicken meal and fish) but only 17% fat. Way lower than my dogs are used to. If it continues to work well, I'll simply add fat when needed. One vet says olive oil. Another, butter. Gotta be simple as we'll be on the road a lot. Ideas?

To Ezzy's point, the fact this post popped up this time of year tells me its more the weather and humidity than anything else. Also, there is a difference between yeast in the ear wax and a yeast infection in the ear. The latter will have redness and a soft, slimey wax. If the wax is brown but dry,...

We left a friend's Lab in one, back at the truck, while we hunted chukars. A half hour later, here she is, right next to us a mile from the truck. When we got back, there was a slice in the "crate," evidently from one strategic claw stroke. Won't hold a motivated dog!
