Re: Puppy Barks in Outside Kenne
If you feed him when YOU don't want to, you're reinforcing an undesirable behavior. Telling them to "shush" doesn't work. It'll take work on your part. EVERY time pup barks, go right back to the kennel, open the gate, pinch the pups jowls on his upper canines, and command NO!. One word, that's it. W...

Re: Running with a GSP?
I'm pretty careful about running pups a lot, before about 8 months. I'm a big bicycler, so much of my dog's exercise is from a bike. I can't keep up with them and I can cruise along at 10mph, 12 if I'm pushing it. I bore the dog's; you can't run fast enough, far enough to tire one out. Let me hive y...

Just keep in mind that you can't cure aggression with aggression. Many times it makes it worse. I think what the dog is doing, from the description, is protecting his home and family. Easy way to check that is to take him in public, around a Mall or even into a Cabelas and see how he reacts. If it's...

Kenneling is one of the indispensable things you teach a dog and EVERY hunting dog should know the command. If you start them living in a kennel, it becomes their sanctuary and they love it. Let her watch TV laying in it, sleep in it at night, etc. Always give the command "KENNEL" to get her in it. ...

You'll have to keep in mind with these German dog's that some take to becoming a handling waterfowl dog and some don't. As Ray said, the program you will want to follow for a duck dog is the Smart Fetch series from Evan Graham. I really don't understand why you got a GSP for duck IF you don't also do waterfowl. A retriever breed would have suited your needs better and been easier to train as a handling waterfowl dog.

It's a GWP. Many of them make their livings retrieving birds as well as pointing them. It's HOW you let them have the bird. I start them from 8 weeks handling the bird BUT: Pointing is pointing and retrieving is retrieving. So, to clarify, I'll let the pup point hidden birds on a light CC. Then, I'l...

Pinch collar and heeling stick. Fastest method there is. You need a release command also like OK. Later, when he's a little older, you will WANT him to pull you as an isometric muscle builder. When you say heel, he should heel. When you say OK, he should pull.

GRAMPS BASIC DOG TRAINING RULES 1) NEVER GIVE A COMMAND YOU CAN’T ENFORCE. For instance, if you can’t catch the dog, don’t say HERE. If you command and don’t enforce, the dog learns it only has to obey when IT wants. 2) USE A RELEASE FOR EVERY COMMAND. For instance, when you say SIT, don’t just walk...

I haven't read through this whole thread or previous ones but your trainer must have told you the pup was hit by a launcher in training. With some dog's, tug is a good idea. It can give a soft mouth dog a better grip on a bird. As a general statement though, it can be very harmful if done wrong. Never let the pup permanently possess what he is training with. I always have them on a check cord. I'll throw a toy, dummy, etc. and when h...

What you NEVER want to do, is to force him in to the water. My favorite way is to find a small pond or creek. The pond should have an island and both should be wadeable. Sorry CJ, I misunderstood. There is always a release command like "OK". When you're working him on this, you should also instill the release. However, it really isn't necessary. This training only takes one to two weeks, then you're back in the field. With a trained dog.

I can see how it would work, the dog complies no matter the situation or gets the negative. What about people who don't use an e-collar? You somehow have to get a remote recall, one without a leash. If the wind is from the cover and the dog hunts it when there's scent and doesn't when there isn't, there's really no reason for him to enter it. He'd be hunting barren cover, a waste of his time and yours.
