Re: New Gun question?
I shoot an 870, and from what I understand, it's a good thing my old gun is still in great shape, because I wouldn't buy a new one. I hear of a lot of people having issues with new 870s, from the chamber up the barrel. I would recommend a used one though. Get a 1995 or earlier 870 for next to nuttin...

Re: This Afternoon's Woodcock Hunt
Saw a few woodcock as a kid in N. Minnesota. Not many birds up there but I probably flushed 10 in 5 years. Got one. 6 fer 10 looks great to me.

Re: "Whoa" Questions
Thanks for the input. One of the reasons I ask this is that one book I've read says not to train the pup "sit" because it may make "whoa" harder to train. I find it hard to imagine a pup that can't "sit" having any manners. What I'm getting from some of the feedback is that "whoa" is connected to "h...

"Whoa" Questions
As a few of you may already know, I'm waiting for my first GSP pup to arrive if February. I've been doing a bunch of reading up on training, and I've got some questions about whoa. I've heard it described as a "yard" command. I've read that it can't be used around birds- which makes sense to me, if ...

Re: Begginer Hunter?
Yep. 870 express. Cheap and foolproof. Easy to maintain. It was my first gun nearly 25 years ago and it's still my go to gun. You'll probably buy others down the road but you can't go wrong with the 870 as a first gun.

Re: What Is Your Dream Upland Hunt?
Goin' back to the homeland. I'm from Grand Rapids, MN, and I can't wait to get back and chase the ruffs again. With my new GSP. And my brothers. Not necessarily in that order, but probably. Maybe in 2 years. This past year hunting in the NW has been pretty great though. I can dump phezz, huns, cali ...

Re: What type of shotgun are you using for your bird hunts?
Old 870 Express (do they make them in anything but 12?) was my first shotgun and still my go to gun. I'm looking at picking up a baikal o/u 20 though. Nice for quail and I'm finding a lot of shot in my Pheasants at the dinner table. Guess I'm shooting that 870 to well.... lol.

Re: remington sparton 310 20 gauge
I picked up my buddy's Baikal o/u 20 when we were shooting clays before the season. I busted 24 of 25 and thought it was the best o/u I'd ever shot. Now I'm on the lookout for one but they're a bit tough to find in my neighborhood (there are 5000k people in my whole county, so everything's kind of h...

It's okay to share food but you should each have your own water bowl.

Idaho Hunting Dogs Kennel
Anyone ever hunted over a GSP from Idaho Hunting Dogs? I've got a pup coming as a gift from my Fiancee. Great people and the dogs seem amazing. I'm just looking for some independent input, as they might, ya know, be a little biased towards their own dogs.

Re: I just got my first real gun dog..... now what?
Thanks for all the info. I especially like the one about letting the dog get out and explore and learn about the world. Books are on order. I've got the following coming: "How to Have The Best Trained Gun Dog, Taking Advantage of Proven, Unique Training Methods, All Natural - No Expensive Electronic...

I just got my first real gun dog..... now what?
I just moved to Eastern Washington. I've made a good friend and we hunt over his German Wirehairs. I've been searching for a GSP and my fiancee reserved me a puppy for my birthday. I haven't trained a dog in 10 years. I really want to do right by my first GSP (my dream dog) and have many, many great...
