Matt
Funny you bring that name up, Jim owns the sire of my dog (Shades something, I think). I'd better call him.

To clarify, I live in western Nebraska, (not New England).

Understand that not all dogs can be "Forced" to retrieve birds. If they have absolutely no retrieving desire, you'll never make a retriever of him. He'll simply blink the birds. If he runs for tennis balls and likes retrieving things like that, then you can make a good retriever of him by forcing. ...

Maybe this should be a different topic but I am a bit concerned about force-fetching my setter. He is such a timid dog I wonder how he would respond? I have a book by Dave Walker that outlines training setter pups to retrieve by holding the dummy in their mouth. He would just cower when he saw the d...

Upland retrievers?

I'm a 45yr old upland hunter who grew up hunting on a farm in NE and still hunt pheasant and sharptails many days a season. I am not knowledgeable about dog breeds, only having hunted with mostly labs and several GSP's. I've only owned labs because in the past I hunted waterfowl quite a bit of the t...

I owned a 390 and a 391, currently use Montefeltro's. I may be an odd case but I didn't care for the 390 at all, it beat me to death shooting clays. Don't know why but I find the M1 to be a much easier shooting gun with light loads. The 391 is considerably better on the cheek and shoulder than the 3...

Everyone has different tastes and shoots different designs but one thing is for sure, get a stock designed for a lefty. Next, most sporting clays guns have a longer LOP and tend to have better triggers, wider ribs. I very much prefer the SC models for these reasons. You'll find SC guns will hit at a...

I've owned many different auto's, currently own three Benelli's. For me, the Benelli M1 Montefeltro is the best of what I've tried. I really like the thin forearm, light weight and the way the gun cycles with light and field loads. Even though you can shoot 3" mags with it, this isn't really what th...

I got started using 1 1/8 oz #6 lead ahead of Longshot powder a couple years ago on early season pheasant and sharptails. You can get 1585 fps when you use Gold Medal hulls. The results are amazing, great patterns with IC choke. Death rays. Later on when the pheasants are wild and feathered heavily,...

Worst ever; Model 58 Remington Auto. Second worst, Ithaca 10 guage auto. third worst, Remington SP10 (yes, glutton for punishment).

For Pheasant loads, the performance of 1 1/8 ounce loads of 6 shot over Longshot powder in a high capacity hull, (Federal Gold medal is best) is just amazing on early season birds. I promise you won't believe how effective they are. Unbelievable range and performance. You can get 1590 fps. Late seas...
