Re: Question about JGHV, FF, JGV-USA and steady to WSF

I believe it is simple .... I want the dog to point the bird. Not where it was. Not in there somewhere. The dog and man work as a team.

Re: Question about JGHV, FF, JGV-USA and steady to WSF

I asked a vdd judge about this "European " style. He replied we score dogs higher who can relocate on their own and work as a team with their handler. I find the trials a joke where the dog points a bird from some distance and the handler has to try and find the bird to flush. heck I could just go h...

This guy had a rough go of it in his first couple years of life, not a good fit for a rookie birddog family. We ironed out most of the issues and he has been finding and pointing birds for me ever since. He is 100% attached to his people. Would I go out and intentionally find a rescue in hopes of t...

Great pics, glad you are finding birds. I dropped a bird tonight over a slough, watching it come down I looked at water and thought oh heck it is half ice. You teach whoa with or without the collar, I would use the collar , and then use whoa to stop him on birds.
Done correctly the bird isn't the cause for the correction, movement is.

Re: Steadying a Dog On Wild Birds

Ryan's post is my thinking also. If you have a good supply of wild birds, forget the launcher. He might be easily intimidated by the launcher and it is easy to have a malfunction. You don't need to circle out along ways just make sure he can see you , maybe 5 yards or so. Attitude and body language...

I pheasant hunt mostly small pieces of ground so I know what you are trying to accomplish. I use the tone feature to get the dogs attention and then hand signals for changing direction. I wouldn't give up, sounds like a great dog. I would train her to be steady to wing & shot. This will stop her from going in on the point.
This is some solid advice. Training with a navhda group will expose the pup to more of a "event" setting.
