whoa

Finally, the wet weather stopped and i got a chance to take Pepper out and see how his "whoa" training was going....he got a bit close to the bird because of the lack of wind but he held point really well. I was very pleased.

that is a good way to do it. the trick comes when you take the leash from around the belly and just have it attatched to the collar and get the same response. dogs know when you do it this way that the pressure around the belly means whoa and sometimes when you start to work the dog without it they ...

I have to think you run hunt tests/trials with your dogs. I do agree that dogs that run those events do need to see throwers/bird stations, etc... but this dog will never set foot at a dog event so that isnt an issue. This dog will be getting a ton of marks with someone throwing the marks as it prog...

There was also one more intended result of this......to show how a dog progresses in a training scenario. i havent really seen any dog training videos that have shown an unscripted training situation like that and how the dog progressed from obviously not wanting to sit out there all alone to runnin...

That was the intent, for the average guy training his own dog. I actually did use remote bird throwers but they were too far for the camera to see.

I will be doing more of these down the road with a hunt test style to them, with bird throwers and so forth.

it is possible but dont be to quick to keep her in range as she is learning to find birds and hunt. that will come after you get the dog flushing birds. get some pen raised pheasants and work her on those to teach her to use her nose.

if you are going to teach it to hunt, i would either not teach it sit or wait until you get it whoa trained first. i get dogs in for training that are taught to sit before the whoa training and it sometimes makes the whoa training a bit harder and longer because the dog wants to sit down every time ...

if you use the wind to your advantage and work the dog crosswind you can set him up to where you will know when he will go on point and if you have a long check chord on him you can use that to help steady and control him so he dont bust into the bird. if he is ready, i would also start to teach him...

For those that wonder how valuable a remote bird launcher is, watch this video. This dog is only 7 months old and is in his first month of training and having him come so close to the bird could have been disastrous if i wasn't using a launcher. you are right, nothing beats the real deal when it comes to birds. some of the best training a dog can get is spending time on pheasant hunts in places like north dakota and south dakota, for example. a week in a place like that is like 6 months of regular training. and fun too :mrgreen:

you can simulate wild birds with a half dozen "homed" homing pigeons and a remote bird launcher. it is a cheap and easy and very effective way to put your dog in front of a lot of birds where there aren't any.

i agree with the pigeon comment. all i use for months is homing pigeons. a pointing dog owners best friend is a homing pigeon and a remote bird launcher. once the dog is where you want him to be with pigeons then switch to game birds.

you can have the dog wear the collar at any age really as long as you dont turn it on and just want to start to collar condition. start using pressure only after the dog has been obedience trained with a check cord.

the earlier the better. as soon as you can, get the dog playing with live pigeons. i have had dogs as young as 12 weeks old retrieve live pheasants and as early as 6 weeks old fetching bird wings. you cant start too early to build the prey drive and birdiness in a bird dog.

although the "standard age" for e-collar training and condtioning is generally accepted at 6 months of age, it is not really related to age as it is to the dogs temprement and mental developement as well as early obedience training.
