Shooting Birds over young dog and whoa breaking

I know there is some controversy regarding this topic, but thought I would see what everyone else felt about it. I have a 8 month old pointer that is doing pretty well with "come, kennel, and retrieving", but just got back from leaving her with a friend while I was on vacation who said he thought it...

Re: My springer runs off when she's let out of her kennel.

Bummer, First of all it will be o.k. I have a six month pointer pup and she is excited about getting out of the pen. My dog gets out anytime I can get her out, which is normally three times or more a day. I, too, live in town and it does have some added challenges. I just worked with my pup on "come...

Re: Training Collar replacement?

I spoke with a friend of mine today and he said that you can get a replacement, as long as you have the number on your transmittor, as they correspond. He did say that it was almost as expensive as purchasing a new one.

Training Collar replacement?

I have been using Tri-Tronics training collars for years, but today I guess I was in too big of hurry and didn't get my collar on my pup tight enough and she somehow "slipped it". Luckily, I found the collar, but it did get me wondering if you would happen to lose one (which I am sure happens). Can ...

Re: Whoa Training

The method I have used comes from Jon Hann, trainer/owner of Perfection Kennels. He has put on a couple of training seminars for our local Quail chapter. I was somewhat skeptical, but about eight years ago he took my 2 year old male pointer (who didn't know anything about heeling or whoa) put the ch...

Whoa Training

At what age is it appropriate to start whoa breaking? The basic method I use is to use a choke chain and a lead and you actually teach heeling at the same time. I was shown this at a dog training seminar several years ago.

Matt,
That's good to hear. My pup is a little over 5 months and has been pointing pigeons. She also has a nice gait as other Snowatch dogs I have seen. I am very pleased with her so far. I'd love to see a photo of your dog.

Matt,
Gary may be a little hard to catch this time of year with all the farming that he does, but here is his home telephone number: 270-235-5197. If you have trouble getting a hold of him let me know.
Tell me a little about your pup. I also have a 5 month old Snowatch pup.

Training My 22 Week Pup

I sat out three "planted pigeons" today for my 22 week old pointer pup for the first time. It was a little windy and I was really wondering what she would do, but she pointed all three. I still have her on a check cord and much work needs to be done. It is truly amazing how instincts come into play....

Benny,
I'm certainly no expert on this matter either, but from what I understand the dog I referred to had several rocks in its intestines. I had actually never heard of a dog eating rocks until my buddy's dog did. The vet told my friend he had seen it a few times.

In my opinion it is way too early for birds. I belive you need to let your pup be a pup. Take it on walks and let it see everything it can. Having something happen at this age could cause some damage that would take some time to repair. Socialization is important as a pup. I have a 18 week old pup a...

When do most think the intensity thing occurs?

I have a 14 week old pointer pup that loves to play, chew, explore, and retrieve. She is one that just hangs around you and doesn't get too far away. It has been years since I had a pup and was wondering when the "intensity thing" starts to kick in.

When I was breaking my last dog he pointed tame birds with intensity at first. Later in life he would point tame birds ok, but would flag and you could tell he was thing," ok these are the easy ones". On wild birds he had incredible intensity and no flagging.
