I'll cut to the chase. Go get the dog. Say nothing to the trainer about the fact that you are coming down...just go there and get your dog. Before hunting season starts. As others have said...there is nothing a pro trainer can teach a 5-8 month old puppy that you could not have taught the dog yours...

Have no idea what a started Pointer or non-slip retriever is. However a started Springer should be gun proofed, retrieving within close proximity of the handler and have some response to the whistle commands.

Hunted and trained a numbers of Airedales. Hosted some 20 working weekends around the country for the Airedales parent club and Working committee over a 5yr span.

Correction and laziness go well to together. I find that the only time I'm using a correction is when a dog gets lazy about a known behavior and try's to short cut the process by being lazy about his work.

And much of what Higgen's show is what many of us have done for years but once he does it, makes a video, it quickly becomes "Higgin's Method". I will admit there is a Higgins method of explanation of an old time and true method that is little different than common practice with many dog trainers.....

All in all a nice video. Walking away has proved successful for years when developing the retrieve. As a shooting instructor and a field trial gun I really do not like seeing ropes attached to the shooter. Pigeons, used them for all breeds. For me the best training was when they are shot and the dog has to develop a no-handle mark and proper delivery.
