Our old flattie Boomer was by your definition a show dog, but he spent he later years as a working retriever, hauling geese back... don;'t count them out as a nice personal hunting dog!

When you are breeding, every dog has "good genes" and "not so good genes". Hopefully the "not so good" ones are not apparent or hidden in places that don't matter to you, but NO DOG IS PERFECT! If you take the two best dogs in the world (in your opinion) and breed them, maybe one might be better the...

I got into Labradors 30 years ago looking for a "family dog". I had siberian huskies and my husband had a weim. When they had passed on, we went looking to get a dog both of us liked and that would be good with our infant daughter. She learned to walk sandwiched between two yellow labradors. I start...

That said, there are some dog toys that are just plain annoying. My in-laws mutt has a couple of furred creatures that make animal noises - a duck that goes "quack, quack, quack" and a cow that goes moo. That little dog LOVES to make those critters make noise. Meg has a screaming monkey that...

Re: 1st gundog - pros and cons of free feeding?
Just off the top of my head, some of the drawbacks are:
Some dogs are gluttons... they will eat until they burst (or weigh 800 lbs).
They are more likely to become picky eaters than dogs fed at set times.
You don't know if/when a dog is off their feed.

Re: Question on brittany weights
Spaying and neutering young reduces the amt of hormones in the system that tell the growth plates when to stop. Consequently the long bones grow longer than they would in an unspayed/neutered dog. Longer bones mean that the stresses on the joints are greater, thus a greater chance of torn ACLs. I mu...

Meg is an oversized rescue dog. Literally found on the side of the road, never claimed... she was probably 10-12 months at the time. If you are going to trial or show, tail set can be very important. A poor tail set if a conformational fault and it can very definately breed thru. If not, I would be way more concerned with hunting ability.

As I see it, you have 2 choices... 1) put the crate in the kitchen or far end of the house and sleep with a pillow over your head until she gets used to the crate. 2) give up, bring the puppy into the bed with you and you can all get some sleep. I prefer the latter, but that is just my personal choi...

I have never done Penn hip so I won't comment on that, but for pretty much the reasons the KNine and Ezzy mentioned, I would be surprised if you got a good. If you have super diggers, I have gone so far as to dig a trench 12" deep and 24" wide (extending into the dog area). Lay 2"x2" galvanized wire mesh (that is 3' tall) in the trench and hog ring it to the bottom of the chainlink. Fill in the trench and voila.... no more dogs going under the fence!

The last time I flew, a woman had a 9 week old Bernese Mountain Dog puppy in a sherpa and it did just fine. I liked the Home Again service package a little better, they were easy to obtain and most of the vets (as well as the local Humane Society) use Home Again so its one that they routinely scan for.

I use Home Again and do my own. If you are used to giving shots, the microchips just use a bigger needle. If you feel uncomfortable with giving shots or doing simple procedures, have your vet do it.. they will typically give you a break on doing a litter or multiple dogs at once.

THe horizontal leg tanks in the PU bed are great. We use one horse camping all the time. The thing I DONT like about the vertical tanks in the horse trailer that they can contribute to too much tongue weight in a bumper pull trailer. Just remember that water weighs 8#/gallon so a 30 gallon tank adds...
