Training birds for a Johnny house
I will have the opportunity to have some land with one or more Johnny houses on it for training. I want to be able to shoot some birds over my dogs this spring and summer if needed. So to do that in KS there are a couple of options from what I can see. Using non native birds like Chukar or Hun, or g...

Lot of good stuff listed.
But one thing dealing with wounds is that they have to be cleaned properly before they are closed up. Some instructions on how to get the wound clean would help a lot of people.

It is a pretty tough place to hunt. Cover is big and thick in places.
Back in the late 80's it was really good there. But then again every where around here was pretty good in the 1980's.

IMO a good pointing dog should adjust its range according to the cover its hunting. My dad’s EB is wonderful at adjusting according to the cover, she’s fun to watch. Yep, that is it. Unfortunately most folks can't agree on what is "enough" when the cover opens up. Yep again, and the thing is it doe...

I would just like to point out that having field trial champions in a bloodline does not make bird dogs. A line of dogs that have been hunted on wild birds for generations will produce bird dogs just as well if not better as those that have been "proven" in the racing competitions that we call fiel...

What does the number of birds released at a Trial have to do with anything? Look its real simple, dogs come in all styles, skill levels, range,.... some fit your style of hunting, bird and cover, and some don't. But don't, tell the people that run, train and hunt a certain type of dog what they can ...

It takes a lot more skill for a pointing dog to hunt pheasants than a flushing dog. (this is not to say that flushing dogs don't have skill,it just a different skill set) With a pointing dog you are not shooting anything that is not handled by the dog properly. Meaning if the dog flushes the bird, y...

I would not worry about stopping the chase that young. I let mine get through 2 hunting season before I start stop the chase.
