Re: Closed Breed Field Trials
Just one question for the folks who close their stakes - If you put on your trialfor just your breed - how does that help your breed? If you just compete amongst yourselves, how does that make a better britt or a better weim or a better anything? Just curious.

Re: Closed Breed Field Trials
I dunno. I've seen clubs do that before and it was because they did not want a "certain crowd" there. I think it speaks volumes about their intentions. I've seen representatives from each breed capable of competing with any of the other breeds. It really is a shame.

We switch to a maintenance formula during off months and ramp back up to the high protein fat combos during months of high activity. It works for us.

It sounds tome like the dog was not backing behind him and the handler wanted to bring it in for the back. 2 different scenarios. If the dog was already backing, then I would say wait. I don;t care what venue and what competition. That is dirty if you flush and fire without the other handler present...

A person who has seen a fair number of dogs performing the task you want to buy it for should be able to pick out characteristics they want. The training and biddability would be something very hard to discern by a newbie.
I would ask around for that trait.

You can do it, with the right kind of dog. Eventually you will need birds, but I broke one with less than 25 contacts with actual birds.
It's a secret, but you can do it. You just need a dog geaked about something in addition to birds.

They have to earn your trust. if you don't trust him to be steady, then don't let him run that big. When he does transition to that, hide someody in a a treestand or downwind behind a roundbale, etc. Give them the e-collar receiver or bird launcher remote to do the dirty work. He is young. #1 - Take the launchers and put them away. There will be time for those later. #2 - Take some time off #3 - Get her into LOTS of bird contact without launchers. Wild, planted, etc. You might find a local club putting on a trial, test or event where there will be lots of birds. Run the pup afterwards...

I think of Broke as per the AKC, AF version. Steady to wing and shot, and as someone else added - through the release as well. I think being BROKE to that level is essential. That is my definition. I don't think broke could be anything else, IMO. Broke = manners. Taught or inherited.

No, I did not have problems giving shots. Dog got a 7-in 1 at the vet. Had a reaction. Bad reaction. We no longer blindly give that shot. True. They are tools to be used for specific situations and not all. I use launhers to fix creepers and to help with STF, but once those issues are licked I leave the traps in the shed. OK dude.
Did you ask them about titer levels, what is harmful and what is not?
If the dog's titer levels are at a certain level the shot is not needed. If they aren't then the shot is needed. Pretty simple science, really.
Even a britt guy could understand that

You might try holding her back and watching the other dog break and then let the younger dog go. not too long. Hold about 5 seconds.
