Have you just been opening the door and letting them go out on their own . You should do this and let them fly around the neighborhood before you do any road training.

We have a small dog and a Britt in the house. The little dog eats slow so we feed the Britt in a crate. She loves to go into the crate. If it is near feeding time she will stand by the crate waiting. Maybe you could work out something with these thoughts

Your state may have dog training areas on their public hunting land. Once you join a club and meet other members , you will probably make friends and have training days with them in addition to regular club days.

I would guess that he was protecting his find from his bracemate . I have seen this happen where a dog flash points or just runs in because he doesn't want his bracemate to get his bird.

I don't know the reason but I have had the same experience not being able to find birds.MY friend went on a training trip to GA and VA. he could not find birds there either, so the problem is widespread.

for worms I use Wazine17. 1 once to a gal. of water. Take water away eve. before you are ready to worm . That way they are anxious to drink. I forget what the name of the powder is for lice. Just go to your feed mill and get product used for chickens.

I always remove the dew claws on my puppies because I think it gives a cleaner look to the leg. I have had dogs in the past that had dew claws and have never had any problems with injuries

I have been feeding what is called Big4. which is a game bird, feed also Turkey starter etc. Birds do fine with it. I am assuming yours is a pellet not any grain. I raise a lot of babies this way.
