I have been a trapper man since 1976, I carried a Schrade for years. Not all Buck are American made, Boker makes some very nice stuff and I have several Case trappers. Queen makes some nice American made pocket knives as does Moore Maker in Texas.

Scenting conditions are hard for humans to understand and I agree with Neil, they are not always breathing in scent. They must exhale and sometimes this may happen when they are in the scent cone of a bird.

Just had a visit at the taxidermist Saturday. Smooth the feathers gently and then freeze in zip lock freezer bags, double bagging it. He said birds are quick to freezer burn and that I had around 6 months to get them back to him.

He worked with D. Hoyle Eaton, the man who handled Riggins White Knight and Red Water Rex. Both of these dogs figured prominently in Miller's breeding program.

If it is damp bring some old towels, this way you can dry off your dogs on breaks or when changing out dogs. Things will be froze up so water is critical. I have an old Wick hunting vest that they made for me. It is getting faded and worn, I cannot find a "tall" or "long" orange hunting vest anywhere. Anybody have any idea who might make one or makes one that runs long?

Hunted Kansas for 4 days, rested the dogs for 3 days then guided for 3 days. Fed Pro Plan, dogs are looking and performing well. Now that I only have two dogs I can handle the cost easier and I am pleased with the results.

Gun Dog Supply has a heavy orange nylon collar that doesn't fade as bad and has a waxy feel to it. Permatack makes the heaviest made collars I have that are of the slick, biothane type material.

Springer Dude that is awesome! I have pointed woodcock this season in Ray and Clinton counties, the best woodcock hunt of my life was in Caldwell county.

I have always enjoyed the dog work on them and occasionally will shoot one. With this years drought I was suprised to see as many as I have this fall, I have one mounted and hunt with pointers.

Found some woodcock today, it is really, really dry and my Kate dog pointed two woodcocks today. I did expect any woodcock this fall. I am not finding many covies in Northwest Missouri but they are decent sized, some of the quail are small. Pheasant and quail have been jumpy and scenting conditions ...

Went out on the opener Thursday and again today. It has been tough going, finding less birds than I had been during pre-season workouts and the dry conditions have made it hard to pick up singles.

Chores and jobs, man Tommy you're tough. Chores, jobs and ball practice kept many of us out of trouble and taught us team work and responsibility while we were kids. It is hard for me to tell just how staged some of these shows are.

I purchased my last pointer from a repeat litter and am very satisfied. I did my homework on the previous litter and decided this was the type of dog I wanted. It might not always work but I felt the odds were in my favor.

I fed Black Gold for several years, mostly the 26-18 black bag and sometimes the 24-20. I thought it was a good feed for the price but it became harder and harder to find. My feed dealer carries PMI now and I feed mostly the Red Flannel Prime 26-18. Which Pzazz formula are you feeding?

I went to Iowa in 1995 on opening weekend. Three of us shot our limits of pheasants and several quail both days we hunted. We hunted over pointers and finished early both days.

I have a pair of Muck Uplanders for wet days, they have good traction and are comfortable. Danner Sharptails held up and were comfortable but the waterproofing didn't impress me. I think last year and this year in Missouri have been pretty poor, I keep walking and trying. I am finding small pockets of habitat that hold birds and other really nice looking covers that are barren. You and your dogs are both inexperienced at upland hunting and it is a tough time to learn due to shrinking habitat and fewer birds. I have used Ray's method with success with young dogs learning the trade and older dogs who didn't care to be "second fiddle".
