since you are in charge of food.... if it's going to be cold, lots of hot coffee, soup, stews are always welcome. Try to keep the prices reasonable, but you have to make some money for the club. If a warm day, lots of cold water, soda, sandwiches maybe. Make sure you always save food for your judges...

This is a weekend trial, so the big bronze is a bit more than the treasury will allow! But they are beautiful. We normally have ribbons that are in shadow boxes, works for both the ribbon and the trophy all in one. Was just thinking that maybe this year we would try something different. What about a...

Best trophy you ever won
I'm looking for ideas for trophies for our upcoming field trial.
What's the best trophy you ever won?
What's the worst?
What would you like to win?
I guess I'm tired of the old wall plaque.
thanks for any suggestions

For my breed, GWP's, a FC/AFC and DC are important. A FC or DC with a MH at the end is also very nice. A DC or FC with a UT prize is nothing to sneeze at either. Not many of them around. A dog with a Ch/SH title or in the pedigree gives me some hints. We don't have many, if any AF FC's so they aren'...
While the dog doesn't have to deliver the bird "to hand", it must bring it back out of the water and within reaching distance of the handler. It's not a tough test, but our membership thought it important enough to fight AKC for several years to get it for our breed. Quite a few other continental br...

Alpha blank gun?
Has anyone purchased an Alpha blank gun with the orange handle yet? Looks like a good blank, roll out barrel and I love the orange. Should be easy to find if dropped. Saw it on the Trail Blazin Innovations catalog.
Just wondering. Need a new gun myself.

Sensation- the mascot of the Westminster KC
In 1876, the members of the Westminster Club, then primarily a shooting organization, commissioned one of its early officials, George deForest Grant, to send to England for a Pointer which the members could use for breeding purposes. He received a photograph of a dog named Don which had won his benc...

the history of the Westminster dog show/Kennel Club
The colorful history of America's Dog Show In 1877, New York was well on its way to becoming the world's greatest city. This was the year that a group of sporting gentlemen decided that this would be a good time to hold a dog show in Manhattan. It didn't take long before the Westminster Kennel Club,...

Maybe we are talking about two different things here? I do agree that there should be no "conformation standard" with regards to what dogs can and cannot run in a trial, AKC or otherwise. To do so would only hurt the breeds. The Vizslas have done such a thing for their National Championships. No dog...

A tip of the hat to you all for a wonderful discussion. Lots to read and re-read, things to consider, and things to watch for both in the ring and in the field. I can't agree with Wagon that there is no need for a breed standard for working dogs, but I do agree that what you see in some breeds in th...

Unfortunately, this tail surgery is done in terriers quite a lot. They do it to straighten overly bent tails so they stand straight up off of the back. Quite a business I understand. There are those who will band teeth to fix bites, and a host of other illegal and silly things people will do to thei...

Just for clarification..... while the GWP standard has no DQ's it does say what the acceptable things ARE. For instance, it does say the bite is scissors. That leaves little room for the dog that has a bite that is otherwise. It does say the coat is liver and white, the ears are liver, the nose is b...

A bit of white on the chest... maybe a bit too much, wouldn't necassarily stop me from breeding a dog if the dog is outstanding in all other aspects. Now if a Weim or a Viz had a big white spot on his back.... I would pass. A mouth with a couple of crooked teeth may not stop me from breeding either,...

Janet, I've watched your training tape and the puppy you were working with looked like she just might have had what it took to be a Gun Dog in a field trial. She was bold, she was inquisitive, she had decent style, and she was trainable. The way you worked with her taught her to keep track of you wh...

Good breeders who have the best interest of the breed are already doing all of this. They are looking at the conformation and grading the dogs they are breeding. They are working, testing, trialing the dogs they are breeding and grading them in that area as well. They only breed the dogs that are go...

I tried hard to stay out of this one, but can't any longer. Blue eyes in a GWP or probably any pointing breed is not something you want. While it won't hurt the working abillity (other than possible sensitivity to high light?) it's a fault that changes the look of the dog. A blue eyed pointer just l...

GWP's are the only breed that need a water test to complete either a SH or a MH title. Both Weims and GWP's need a water test for a FC or AFC title, no other breeds require this. It took the GWPCA roughly 4 yrs to get this requirement passed with the AKC, they didn't want something for only one bree...

The GWP Nationals have been run at Solon twice.. the first time on the grounds across the road from the club house, the second time on grounds behind the club house. I began my life in dogs with competitive obedience training, but once I got involved with trialing, I stopped. Now I work on "useful" obedience, not formal obedience with my young dogs. They must come when called, be good on a lead, not eat my house and go lie down when they are told. (all of my dog...

It's just as easy to teach a puppy to "stand and stay" as to sit. I did a lot of obedience work with my first dog (got a CDX and trained through the UD, but never got it) and "now" I understand why it's a conflict for the dog. It's not that they can't learn the difference, but for some dogs it's jus...

Most males are "futile" for most of their lives! Sorry, your type just made me smile..... I would guess males are "fertile" when they start to reach puberty, some earlier than others... from 6 mos and up. Having a male, even a very good one, doesn't mean bitch owners will be knocking your door down ...
so... you solution would be, never use a dog with a tail above 9:00 because it "may" have been altered? In order to know or have a clue what type of puppies any stud or bitch will produce, one must have knowledge of it's pedigree, it's brothers and sisters, it's parents etc. If a higher tail is comm...
Gary, get over it! It was one judge, at one trial. I have been trialing for over 25 yrs. I have never known anyone getting their dogs tails fixed. In the show ring, now that's a different story, but not in the field. It may happen, but I don't know any. If your dog is a good one, if all else about h...

Over the years, I've had both males and females. I have almost always found the males to be more cooperative, more eager to do things my way. The girls always have to "think about it" before coming to the conclusion that my way really is better. I also find the girls to be more naturally protective,...
