Onthing: Get some 1/4" or 1/2" galvanized hardware cloth on the outside of it. The raccons will pull the birds through the wire.
The recall pens work great.

Well disregarding all above: All I have ever gotten witha pup is a small crate some shreaded, pissed on news paper and a great welcome when I opened the door of that crate. I never asked for more. Even at 3 or 4 weeks you will see little difference in a short visit. If the breeding is from proven lines, you have seen the parents work, and are happy with them: I like a forward mover, a pup that that is inquisitive, etc. Otherwise, find the one you have a connection to and like the looks of. If...

Re: Circling the bird, do you know how to train for it?
When a dog is circling a bird (at least mine,) the times I have seen it, the dog had a bird that was sneaking out of town. The dog could smell the scent getting weaker or could see the bird moving away, (I have witnessed both). Ruffs do this all the time. Especially if they are behind a blow down or...

As a Brittany and GSP owner, I do not see this as a GSP bashing. I see it as pure numbers. The Ames and others were and still are Pointer and Setter games primarily. I suspect the reason is just as you stated. More and more dogs are being FF. They want to maintain or at lease have the perception of a natural retriever..
