Getting over gunshyness - video included

Shot this a week ago. When Moxy was a pup she showed so much promise, but when we were burning out in the yard one day Moxy just happened over about the time an aerosol can exploded right next to her. Took me awhile to coax her out from under the pickup, but she was all shakes and we've had a time g...

Re: What's Your Best Method to Teach Steady to Wing and Shot

Mountain, by "drop," I mean to kill the bird for the dog. When I'm going to let the bird go I like to use pigeons, but when I'm going to let the dog smell the bird, especially if the dog is going to get the bird in his mouth, I like to use quail. The dogs just get more excited over quail and since t...

Re: What's Your Best Method to Teach Steady to Wing and Shot

No, Sharon, this is just a basic overview of JUST the steadying process. I get my pups conditioned to the gun early on, way back in step number one. And, when I first use the gun while the dog's Whoaed up and I'm throwing birds, I often times have an assistant stand way off or behind a barrier and s...

I have never understood how so many folks think predators could take that kind of toll on upland populations. I mean, how often does a birddog catch a wild bird? If Coyotes could do it so easily, why wouldn't someone have ever trained dogs to just catch the birds and bring them back? It makes no sen...

Johng, I am breaking her out for broke stake because that's what's required. But, if they had AF or AKC-like trials that didn't require a dog to stand steady, I'd be all over it. UBH had it right, in my opinion, and the AF Gun Dog stakes (Am. Derby) is the right idea. But, I'm not a rule-maker, I'm ...

I just don't get why we put so much training on our trial dogs to begin with. I'm kind of beating a dead horse here, so I'll leave it at that, but if a trial is to gauge a dog's ability, why judge dogs after they have so much man-made behavior? There's just too much variable. I don't own any contine...

I trained my first dog with Delmar Smith's method. That's the way I've done it for most the time I've been in dogs, but I've been transitioning. This is where I'm headed. I'll make it general to to keep it from turning into a novel. 1. Get the dog into PLENTY of free birds. Let him bump, chase, have...

I'm not sure if this is a trial dog or what, or even what the rules would judge if a dog establishes point on old scent and the handler never calls point. Either way, I think that's what happened here. The dog didn't actually scent the bird, he scented old scent so he stopped. Then he worked on, cau...
