What you learned from your first

Most of us are guilty of being naive to some level about something in life. I sure have learned a lot from my experience that books didn't teach me with training. If I have learned anything from these first 6 months of my pups life... well I'de have a lot of ties for the most important lesson. My bi...

A guarding Brittany?

So when I got to choose my pup, I only had the choice between 2 males, one was very submissive and dependent while the other was off exploring on his own and seemed to squirm around on his back until he just lost energy. I decided on the more independent one, thinking that it would be better for a n...

In that case, say I have limited funds and will hunt mostly public land, and say narrow it down between Colorado and Montana

Best state for bird hunting?

What is your opinion? I was going to make this a poll but I am too lazy at the moment to look up the state abbreviations I've forgotten. If you could move anywhere in the US for JUST upland bird hunting, where would it be? If you had to pick a state with compromise that had great hunting, but also t...

Re: too early for prong collar?

I ended up getting an Astro with the DC-40. What an amazing device. I have done a lot of GIS work in the past so I was already interested in these collars before I got a dog. I already have the game lands for NC in my google earth and I can enter waypoints where I find sign or spot the large game I ...

Re: too early for prong collar?

This is all great feedback thanks. I'll save the poke collar for a little later as a tool for training heel and for now will stick with the cc and normal collar in the yard for recalling. I'll also not worry so much about him being off amongst the barbed wire and mushrooms, gotta let the hatch-lings...

Re: Rock on birds 4 months

I have never seen someone use dove for training lol.
That's what the bird feeder is for in my back yard

Another good excuse for me not to mow my back yard.

Is this common with Brits?

My brittany has finally calmed down a touch, only during the daytime though. He is about 6 months old now and during the day, he mostly just lays around. I was thinking maybe he was bored so I went out and got him some new toys, he played for a bit and then went right back to the couch to sleep. Com...

Re: too early for prong collar?

In the end the only thing you can do is go back to yard work. He's telling you that you havn't completed his training there, it doesn't hurt to overlay the collar even at an early age (still a little too early). How long are you running him for? One mistake amateur trainers make when running a dog ...

Re: too early for prong collar?

I have stopped giving treats while training. I make him do something to get his meals though. In that case, what is the best advice for my problem with recalling. As mentioned above I need to increase the motivation for him to come using treats and more praise. The more I get to thinking about train...

Re: too early for prong collar?

That's good advice. I always make him do things for his food which involve staying, coming, and a few side tricks. I have also taught him to sit/stay, stand/stay, and down/stay. He won't touch his food, or move until I release him with the OK command. He never fails to come in these before meal exer...

Re: too early for prong collar?

I was letting him drag a cc at the fields I goto but have let him off of it at some wooded property I have access to. The poke collar would obviously only be used in close training sessions. He is a brittany and weighs about 30 pounds if that makes any difference. I worry a little bit about the cc g...

too early for prong collar?

My I puppy is about 5.5 months old now, so most advice is two weeks too early. Every dog is different though and I seem to have a very assertive pup. For the most part our field exposure has included a check chord aside from the earlier weeks when I could still catch him. This was in order to train ...

For all of you Southern Appalachian folks on the forums, where do you get your birds from? I have been trying to find some quail for some time now and everyone is sold out until this coming fall... yikes!

Birds and help in Asheville Area?

Hey everyone! I am looking for some help introducing my Brittany to some birds in the Asheville, NC area. He will be 5 months this weekend and some of my previous plans for bird introduction are looking less promising. Is anyone here from the area or know anyone else located somewhat nearby that wou...
