Gar-Dog...thanks so much for posting that view of the course! And I'm glad you had a great time at your first trial. Yes it is addictive. Our oldest trial dog placed 3rd in OGD at his 3rd trial with the trainer and someone said that I should go shoot those judges because they just cost me a bundle o...

Well there's "talkin" and then there's seeing your dog in the results in your breed magazine and maybe a pretty picture along with it. There is no monetary return in this game so I look forward to the ego return... :D Actually there isn't much talk amongst the Brittany folk about placements in "off-...

We go to mostly Brittany trials but will do setter and other breed trials on occasion when time/money permits. One time I emailed a secretary for an AKC Irish Setter trial like two days after the trial opened- trying to get my Irish Setter in- they were full already - with Shorthairs, Gordons, Vizsl...

Well if you have any broke dogs you can run them in AGD and AAA. Then you won't have to walk! Although if this weather keeps up we may be running dogs from boats, lol...Kristi

There are a few weekends at Smokerise that there is a hunt test only on one day. Those weekends would probably be an option for us. Living 25 minutes from Jesse's- I'm all for having them there, lol... The other grounds are all set up for pointing breed trials but we would have to supply horses. The...

I've not seen him run. Have had my dog beaten by him quite a few times. He seems to have a real good temperment. Met a couple of 4 month old pups sired by him about a month ago- both were nicely conformed pups with friendly outgoing personalities. Their breeder is a long timer in the Brittany commun...

Hi Justin, So what would you rather see being an experienced hunt tester in this part of Ohio? Would you rather go to a hunt test in late August before FT season on different grounds or would you rather stick with basically what we have now in this part of the state and go to Smokerise an extra day ...

Thank you both for the input. We're still in the planning stages of holding a hunt test and actually just had our first discussion about it at our meeting on Saturday. As far as KP we had a visit from Tom Honeker at our trial there on Sunday. They (ABDCO) are still working on the issue of KP and IC....

Proposed Pointing Breed Hunt Tests in Ohio

Hi, I need some opinions. One of the breed clubs I belong to would like to put on a hunt test. The club hasn't put one on in awhile now. We do hold 2 AKC field trials each year. We are kicking around what time of year to hold the hunt test. One of the proposals was in late August right before FT sea...

Not to mention she might not get much out of the session either. Trainer had our girl recently while she was in season. Although she was able to stay in training, several of his other girls who were "in" had to take a break. They just weren't in the frame of mind to be learning at the time. We did d...

We were in Illinois this past weekend for a field trial. Illinois residents had to have a current hunting license but for field trialers the out-of-staters are given a waiver. Kristi

I think it depends on a couple of things- the pro vs amateur discussion that is. Depends on where you trial at and what breed(s) you trial with. We have two breeds- Brittanys and one Irish Setter. The Brittany trials we go to are dominated by amateur handlers. The setter trials we go to are dominate...

Thanks for the welcome by the way Don! I'll try to post just often enough to get "shot at" now and then! LOL! Just Kidding. Differences of opinion make the world a whole lot less boring. Kinda like people preferring different breeds of dogs or games to play with them...Kristi

I agree about overdoing it. And our trainer told us from the get-go to "get the points and then STOP". And we followed his advice. Afterall- now it's his job to break her, lol... In our experience- It was difficult to start out in the broke dog stakes which is where we started. Hubby had to learn ho...

Wow Don just shoot me out of the water on my very first post! LOL! No wonder I've been on this forum for months and kept my mouth shut til now! :D We field trial because it is FUN. If we didn't have fun. If our dogs didn't have fun- We wouldn't do it. It's not something we MUST do. It's something we...

I've been on both sides of this river... :) First trial dog did not do puppy/derby. In fact didn't do much more than point a few pigeons and dove before he went to the field trainers at 3-1/2 years old. He broke quickly- not easily -as he LOVED to chase and it took the trainer awhile to get through ...
