JAG06 I think you are exactly right that most people over estimate the range that their dogs are working at most of the time. I am in the Flinthill of KS and we have a lot of plum thicket, hedge row and fence lines. I love having a dog that will hit the objectives or take a line on the down wind sid...

Re: Freezing Quail waterers

I would think that you could use an aquarium pump to keep a little water moving. That should take less power than a heating tape. So the solar power and battery might work. You would likely need to put a thermostat on it so that the pump only came on below freezing.

It happens, my setter Indy has the family record in over $800 in stitches in his first two seasons. That doesn't include the surgical stapler that I used up all the staples on him. One cut was good for 48 stitches across his chest. Hope he learns to downshift before getting to the fences and thick c...

JD came out of MIke Miller's Sixgun Kennels in Wisconsin. He's not what most people think of as a typical Lewellin when it comes to range... He's a big running dog and can cover a lot of ground in a hurry, but he doesn't run wild and stays in contact with me... He'll range out 500 and 600 yards at ...

I have a dog now that is likely to be my favorite dog ever. Indy, like from Indiana Jones, you hear the theme song to Raiders of the lost Ark when he is flying through the cover and slamming on point.

My son came up with the name.

The best way to expose a dog to gunfire that I have seen and used is to get the dog chasing a bird. When the dog is running hard after the bird fire the gun away for the dog and watch for a reaction. Then let them chase another one and don't fire, just watch. If you see a reaction to the shot put th...

I want to have the compass stay visible when I am hitting the Tone button. It jumps to the training screen, which is a pain. My dogs don't need much in the way of corrections, but I use the tone a fair amount to keep them on to turn or check in when hunting.

Pointing distance will very from situation to situation. On a day with good scenting conditions with a smelly bird like a pigeon, I have had points at over 60 yards or more. But there are times where the dog comes across the scent cone and passes by close to the bird, its going to be a close point. ...
