The size card that I use is 3x6 inches. The length of the string is determined by the abount of cover. Thick cover requires a shorter string, about 6 inches between bird and card. For sparse cover I use a string of 12 inches. If the birds are getting into the trees, you may want to pull a few flight...

Creating a Training Area
My wife's Grandpa has 200 arces of land that is currently be leased out for cattle grazing. The lease is up next year. At that time, he has stated that I can purchase the land. When I do, I want to turn the land into a training ground for my dogs. Does anyone have a good idea of what I should do to ...

You may want to try Dave Walker's dvds as he used pigeons to train dogs. He starts be letting them chase and catch them and then works with the check cord on the "whoa" command and on "stand up stand still" of bird dog training.
I have used his method and it has worked well.

This may get me in trouble but, her goes. Any dog can be taught. If you are planning to trial the dog, let her run big and get a tracking collar. If you want her as a personal hunting companion, reel her in. I have three dogs, two are field trial dogs and one is working on his Senior Hunter title. M...

You might want to try Dave Walker's dvds or book. His methods worked on my Brittanys and my friends GSP. They also helped with a few Labs that I know.

I agree with everyone. Until you get the dog into the field, you just never really know what you have. That said, The best hunting dog I ever had was the runt of his litter. In the litters that I have breed, I have seen the runt out think the bigger litter mates. I think it has something to do with ...

I hunted in your area years back and found the bird plentiful. I am sorry to hear that they are reduced in numbers. I try to look at it from my dogs point of view: They work their hearts out for me and then come home without putting anything in the bag. I would not harvest birds as I do when guiding...

I also read the original post. The dog does not have this problem outside of the house. This leads me to believe that it is a dominance issue. Dominance can be dealt. The dog is acting as if it is the alpha dog. I have been able to train dogs away from this type of behavior and believe that the dog'...

That is what I love. Pop-psychology. Dog take their cues from their owners. Many tend to allow the dog to become dominant, alpha dog, in the house. This is a problem behavior not a shot em first situation. If your first tendency is to put the dog down when it shows any sign of bad behavior, get a cat.

Sorry, I am going to disagree. Dogs are territorial by nature. However, they tend to take their cues from you. The dog may have gotten the impression that this was acceptable from you as a puppy. Before getting rid of him, you may want to work the agression out of him. Try using a training collar wi...

I would have to say that Greg is right. I personally will not breed my dogs if the interest is not there. Breeding should never be about the money, it is about the dogs. From my last litter, 6 of the 10 puppies found homes due to referals. Where some of the breeders in my area still have half of the...

I agree. If you have had the chance to see both dogs work and like what you have seen, go for it. Titles show what the dog can do and are worth while. But, if you know what the dogs can do and each dog is free of health concerns and has been OFA certified Good or better than you will, most likely, g...

Training Areas in Utah
I was just wondering if anyone has been out to the West Desert lately?
I was planning on taking my dogs there on Friday, 2/15, for some training.
Now with the snow and the wind I am wondering if the Pony Express road is driveable. So, with that being the case. How does the area West of Lehi look?

The wings seemed bigger then me
The funniest point that my Ron has had happened last fall. We were out hunting quail and found a Goose instead. Kicking out a bird that will bite back really does something for the old ticker. I shot the honker and laughed as Ron brought it back.
