Puppy feeding
I've had my pup just a few days now and was trying to just feed her twice/day. The problem is that she doesn't seem to be interested in eating more than a few bites at a time so I have had to leave the food out in order for her to get the recommended amount for her size. My question is, is this 'fre...

Re: Got my pup today!
Yup a setter. She comes from Performer and Sunrise lines. Sire came from Robertson Kennels in Idaho and the Dam was from Bar-Lee Kennels here in Bend. 10 pups total and I think 2 are still up for grabs. Feel free to contact me if interested. Couldn't be more pleased with the whole process. Met 'mom'...

Got my pup today!
I'm so excited! She's absolutely awesome. Very bold and independent but still just as sweet as she can be. I'm looking forward to many happy years. I took the week off from work (woot!) and am going to just hang out with her, teach her her name (Gertie) and work on crate/potty training. So much fun!...

Re: Rattlesnake bites are on the rise
Thanks for all the replies and good information! I'm going to do some checking and see if I can get her into an avoidance class when she's older and ask my vet what she thinks of the vaccine. Btw, I had to work this weekend and miss the NW Regional NASTRA trial in E. Washington. Tell me again why I ...

Re: Rattlesnake bites are on the rise
I heard something interesting from a biologist that works in the Grand Canyon area. They are having problems with rattlesnakes not rattling anymore. People have been killing them in these high recreation areas for so many years that natural selection has started selecting snakes that do not let thei...

Re: Upland Hunting Coats - Recommendations?
I also have a Filson field jacket that I love. I work outside a lot and actually bought if for that purpose but have used it for hunting, getting wood, camping... whatever. Spendy but it has held up great over the years and great for layering.

So sorry. I sure hope you find your pup. I do volunteer work at our local Humane Society and have seen a couple very happy reunions. I'll think positive thoughts for you.

Re: Advice solicitation
Sharon, I think it might be a little early as well. She'll be 6 wks. and 5 days. I think the litter came a few days later than the breeder had planned and he had already made arrangements to let the pups go home at an invitational hunt that a lot of his clients were going to be attending. He said he...

Re: Advice solicitation
Ok. So I'm developing a plan of attack here. I took the first week the pup is home off from work to hang out and work on crate training, going outside, socialization with my cat (don't throw anything!) and some of the local dogs that I know and trust and just generally playing with her and making he...

Re: Advice solicitation
Thanks for the advice. I've read 'Wing and Shot' and 'Gun Dog' and watched the 'Wing and Shot' and 'Training English setters' DVDs (Sherry Ray Ebert). I've heard good things about Delray Smith and am considering looking into some of his stuff. The breeder I'm getting my dog from is also a trainer an...

Oops. Probably should have mentioned that She's an English setter (Performer/Sunrise lines). I'll pick her up in 3 weeks when she's about 6 1/2 weeks old. We'll be learning from each other for sure!

Advice solicitation
I am picking up my first upland hunting dog (had Lab and Chesapeake before) and would like to train her on grouse and chukar and am considering giving a go at trialing. Does anyone have any words of wisdom on training, socialization, equipment... whatever? Ya'll seem pretty knowledgeable and I would...

Re: From Oregon new to GDF
Thanks again. A friend of mine actually knows Jane (small world) and suggested that I contact her via facebook. Anyway, the plan is to head on up to Tri-Cities in a couple of weeks. Maybe I'll see ya there. Cheers.

Re: From Oregon new to GDF
Thanks for the welcome. Bend is definitely a beautiful area. A little smokey this time of year but amazing all the same. Good chukar and grouse hunting in the area too. Looking forward to getting out there with my girl next season!

Pedigree name?
I'm getting my first pedigreed dog and am wondering if I give it it's pedigree name or if the breeder does? Sounds silly but I honestly don't know what the etiquette is here.

From Oregon new to GDF
Hey there. My name is Holly and I live in Bend Oregon. I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of my first hunting dog (Oct. 1). I am getting a female English Setter and plan to hunt grouse and chukar. I also joined NSTRA and am hoping to attend some trials to see what it's all about and if it might be ...

Re: A little about you...
My name is Holly, I live in Bend, Oregon and I'm a 33 year old wildlife biologist (i.e. bird nerd). I've bird hunted (mostly grouse and a little chukar) since I was a kid. My last dog was a yellow lab. that I rescued but she wasn't much of a hunter (loved frisbee though). I pick up my English Setter...
