Have seen a dew claw get ripped pretty bad while in the field, far more painful and took longer to heal than the $85 surgery to have them removed at 6 mos. Will always have dew claws removed.

Sounds a little like my season so far, all others have been shooting the few pheasant we have seen. Have had 19 points in 3.5 days of pheasant hunting, not one has been a rooster, good experience for the pup though. He has had to get his retrieving in at the duck marsh.

The heaters work great if you are in a situation to use them, I rarely was. The neoprene vests do help, I also keep a towel or Shamwow in my blind bag to dry the dog off, and a dog blind works great for keeping them out of the wind.

I agree with JKP, that is the same way I use my collars, my favorite has been the Dogtra series. I have no complaints with my SD 1225 Sportdog to date, hopefully it lasts 8+ years as well.

I also had a dog that was all about wild birds but would refuse to even point pen birds.....I cannot in anyway prove or disprove I somehow caused this....I tend to think we cause the problem with the dog that won't point planted birds. If anyone reloads 12 gauge trap loads, what is the cost to reload a box? I don't shoot trap myself, but I have patterned many loads to see what would work for dove. In my experiences, the shorthairs and so forth, do seem to get more roughed up on our hunting trips. Lookin good, sounds like a great first hunt. Experienced the same with my 8 mo. old WPG, did a good job on retrieves and searching for downed birds. Left for the trip with a pup and came back with a hunting dog, also had a solid point on a covey of quail, that got me real excited.

My dad and a friend both have the 280 ncp, have had no problems at all. I talked them into buying Dogtra after having a 202 ncp for 8 years with nothing but 1 battery change, 2 years later a friend of mine is still using it.

Finally caught a break here in NE Kansas, mid nineties with a heat index around 100. Been nice to get out and do some much needed work, dogs have really enjoyed it also. Feels really good after 112 yesterday.
