Re: Brittany as a "waterfowler?"

My britt was also in the 50-55 lb range, and a great waterfowl dog. He was the best dog I have hunted with when it came to sitting in the blind, he would stay motionless and not take his eyes off the sky, but he also upland hunted slow and methodical. Minus the weather limits he was a great overall ...

Re: COULD THIS BE CONSIDERED AN ADDICTION?

Unfortunately i did not breed him, he is the last of that bloodline in the family. I had him neutered when i got my lab, was young and didn't know enough about training to handle two alpha male dogs. My dad raised dogs from three generations before Sandy, that bloodline was greatt, wish we wouldn't ...

Re: COULD THIS BE CONSIDERED AN ADDICTION?

This is a great post, brings back a lot of good memories. Always had bird dogs around when i was young, mostly brits. Started walking with dad while hunting when i was 5 years old, had to have my own dog by the time i was seven, luckily dad was to breed one of his brits and months later i had Sandy,...

Re: Relocating on Runners

I got nothing against FT's, but I strictly wild bird hunt. Mainly Pheasants. I could care less about shooting quail. I like to see my dogs pin Roosters. I want my dogs to pin pheasants by whatever means necessary. Yes they relocate. They have to. If they don't, you're going to have alot of unproduc...

Dogs that hunt on preserves might be like my brit, took him to a couple preserves when my dad got his two liver brit pups, he would not lock up on pen raised phez or quail, he would stand there tail wagging and look at me as to say" Dad, something is not right about these birds"! Re: Wild pheasants

I hunt nothing but wild birds here in Kansas with brits and my recently passed lab. Have no problems getting late season birds to hold, as stated earlier, i hunt really slow, the faster your dog moves the faster the birds want to run. 90% of the points my brit has had he was within five feet of the ...

Re: A Bit Confused?!

I taught my brit to sit, stay, heel, come, lay, mark, and everything else needed to also be a good waterfowl dog, the same as i did my lab. And yes they both also shook with both paws and napped on the couch with me and tried stealing my pillows at night. I see no problems with it as long as your do...

Re: How far can dogs scent?

Bill, sounds like your dog has a good nose, more experience should help with the false points. I have seen my brit wind quail or pheasant in a hedgerow from a 100 yards or so. He would then slowly work in that direction to pinpoint the birds or start tracking. If the birds were running it could take...

Re: Choke Question

Steel shot and lead shot pass through choke tubes completely differently. With lead loads typically being far slower than lead loads along with smaller pellet size it is easier to predict how a load will respond to a changing of chokes in my opinion. Steel on the other hand does not always like cons...

Headin to the NW part of the state this weekend. Having a hard time believing it is going to snow, cause that would mean precipitation, something the eastern part of the state i believe is immune to. Don't go too far NW. Bird numbers are not good in the northern tier of counties. Stay at least 2 co...

Re: Worst predator

I think humans/farmers also need to be on the list, with a little habitat left behind it makes it easier for birds to survive from other predators. And city sprawl and all home owners who mow their lawns. Being facious but if we are listing farmers we need to realize city owners are just as guilty....
