My understanding of this is that dogs learn by association. A dog will associate a cue in its environment as it relates to the dogs desire for reward as well as the dogs understanding of what is safe or dangerous. An example of how a dog learns through association is when you get your gun out of the...

Clicker training is for house dogs not working dogs. It is nothing I would put any faith in, if a house dog don't obey a command it is not a big thing most are in a yard or on leash if a working dog don't obey a command it could be a matter of life or death. If you are training the dog to whoa , part of this training is getting the dog to exhibit this behavior while you walk around the dog. Dogs are place oriented. When they experience things it is relative to their surroundings. If the dog had a bad experience in that location or something as small as seeing a tree that looked the same as one in a place , that the dog had a bad experience at ,it could set the dog off. My idea of obedience is a dog that does what you want because the dog is self motivated to do it. In the post on clicker training I described a method of positive reinforcement for a dog that offers wanted behaviors for reward. When a dog is self motivated there is no chance of the dog being a robot...

Dogs learn by association. If a dog stands still and a bird flushes from the cover the dog will repeat this behavior because it is seen as rewardable. Since dogs learn by association this helps to avoid the dog perceiving the taking a step as the catalyst for producing the bird. In the field you can...

All dog training relies on the motivation of the dog . If you have a non bird dog breed all the birds in the world will not motivate the dog to see training as beneficial to the dog.
