Re: Breaking at the flush

The first season I hunt a dog, I expect them to stay steady and let me flush the birds. If I flush the birds, I shoot, if not I don't shoot and we go look for more birds. If they chase after the shot its not an issue.

I have seen it in dogs that have had too much pressure put on them in training. I suspect in some situations it is a sign of uncertainty in a dog.

I am sure it can also be partly from breeding.

Nothing wrong with going to the CC for a reminder / refresher. Its the best tool in the box for a young dog.

I would think that a GSP or a Brit that could run with the top end pointers and Setters at Ames, would not resemble GSPs or Brits much.

The breeding focus for the breeds have been different.

I have two setters. Ace will average in the 9-11 mph range. Indy is always faster in the 12-16 mph range.
I will tell you that I had to staple Indy multiple times this season. Indy got cut up several times.

I would not worry about his range, it doesn't matter. What matters is that he will hold point until you walk in front and flush.
Steady him up, that is the problem not his range.

From my understanding, a well designed Johnny house is set up so that they have to fly up to a perch to see out. In other words you want a fairly tall house. The flying up helps keep them in condition.
