Re: Your Dog's Vocabulary
I'm hunting out of a Tracked Wheel Chair so I added a few new words/commands to my Setters repertoire: "Stand Off" When I'm going to move the chair; "Lunch", he pulls the lunch sack out he pack on the back of the chair, this one was easy to learn because his lunch is in the same bag. "Side" when I w...

Re: training new dog with older dog
I've tried to do this twice myself, have watched friends and relatives try it. The dogs were GSPs, Setters, and Chessies. I tried running a female pup with a 10 year old male Setter with almost tragic consequences. The old dog,the sweetest, gentlest dog I've ever seen, ignored the pup in the yard an...

I've always had two Setters until a few years ago. I have one 13 year old Setter and a 10 year old Chessie now. I had two big going dogs in the years we hunted Huns on the edge of the prairie. Huns were always widely scattered and two dogs made it a lot easier to find them. A few years ago, my remai...

Re: Refinishing a stock
It just occurred to me that "BLO" might be boiled Linseed Oil, if that's correct then the Varnish will be a bit tacky for many weeks because the oil will dry very slowly when coated with varnish. The more coats of varnish you use the longer it will take to dry. It will dry but may take a long time. ...

That's what I meant by having patience with varnish. It may take several days to dry each coat. Put it on very thin and make sure it is completely dry before sanding and adding the next coat. Hopefully the wood was completely dry before the first coat was applied. If it's still tacky in three days, ...

All a matter of personal preference as to degree of gloss, feel of finish, etc. If you want a high gloss finish only 'varnish' will do. My preference is for a very low gloss, or at most, a satin finish. If the stock is down to bare wood, I'd use a hand rubbed oil finish, of Tru-oil or Tung, Teak, or...
