For 2012 they replaced the weak V6 with a modern 285hp V6 that makes a huge difference.[/quote] That's good to hear it was upgraded in the motor compartment, did they work on the death wobble also? There's more than one way to skin a cat. I don't want another obstacle to overcome when the pup goes to catch a bird again the second time around. Just simply a good introduction and no pigeon wings slapping on a 8 wk old pup.

Hold off on the launcher for a while. Wave the birds around in front of the dog, then cross the wings and toss the bird gently in some tall grass. Don't let the dog catch it.

Pheasants can get to scooting in tall cover but one good one will get it done fine. Two or more can turn into a foot race between dog and result in wild flushes but also may block a runner once and a while. If I really wanted two dogs out there it would be a retriever at heel as the second dog.

There are a bunch of good English pointer breeders in Texas. As mentioned earlier they are popular there for good reason. And do like Roosters mom said. Get the second dog after you finish the first.

Tractor supply will have a sulfa type powder in a small packet for around 7$ in the cattle section. Also try some of the wormer for poultry that they carry. Years of scouting, scanning google aerial views, talking to ranchers and the hit and miss in the few areas that are productive. Also takes a dog that's happy with it's feet and face full of cactus. I think Arizona and a guide would be your best bet. No birds here in NM.
