I have used all of the above as well. But really once the dogs realized that the flag meant bird and started pointing it made it easier to work on backing drills later. This assumption that the birds will fly off is just wrong. Will they walk off yes, but your dog will know this and will learn to relocate. If your dog is trained to stop to flush. It will stop to flush when it bumps or crowds or busts a bird. Two if the bird is with in site of the dog probaly the bi...

Re: How Is a German shorthair Pointer supposed to hunt?
Hey there: Fellow Mainer here. I am in the Augsta Area. I hunt GSP for the last 15 years. And Brittanies. I would bet the most distance they hunt is 250 yards, If a dog is running more than that in the woods it is not hunting it is chasing something. Not saying that some do not but for the most part...
Re: Launchers
Why do you need the beeper.
It is not necassary.
If the remote controler and launchers work reliably, keep using them.
The dog does not need to hear a beep to know anything.
Flag the launchers so you know where they are when working the dog.

Re: How to "wing train"?
Above is true, but it does make a good retrieving tool. Helps dog be used to dead bird scent. Tie to a bumper etc. But not a good tool to teach point. The pup has point in it. Real birds and not catching the bird will make that point come out. Remember the point is basically a hestitation before the...

One other thing:
As far as throwing the duck. You can just go out and place the duck. You should have a release command, as well as the recall.
If the dog is dropping the wing or duck before it gets back to you, you will need to work on a hold command.

In all reality. Not that important. It is just a tool for the breeder, but only if the dog is not actually trained to pass the test.
