There are several Llew sites that will tell you history and bloodlines back to the beginning, google Llewellinsetters and you should find them. Nice looking dogs! I have a poor picture of my ES and a Red Setter together on point from a PF youth hunt. Looked like something you see only in paintings, wish the actual photo turned out better. I have never heard of there being grouse at Salt Fork but have never hunted there either so could be. Woodbury by Coshocton has some though not tons. The edges of the open strip mined areas ake for some successional cover. Egypt Valley should be similar, managed to find a couple there year before la...

Sat was a tough day for dogs. Only 8 of 18 Open Pointing runs even found all 3 of their birds and only 2 of the 7 Amateurs. Fastest 3 bird Open Pointing runs on Sat were 4 minutes (first run), 13 and 15 minutes. These are largely dogs that have won and placed National Tournaments, multiple time CH, ...

Grouse, roosters, and quail we sometimes count days per find instead of finds per day. Not too many days I can't find at least a hen pheasant if really looking. Maybe the dogs appreciate the finds more when they are scarce, I know we hunters do! LK, I get that the dog is staunch all the way through ...

Will lead to chase which is fine if you don't wante her steady through shot and she learns to come off ones not coming right back down. Not everyone wants a dog steady to fall. Won't happen with wild pheasants, they'll keep going and even the few wild quail left in OH won't let her catch though it m...

UFTA runs are with just one dog and handler except for the doubles Division and then the other dog in the field is on your team. UFTA requires that the handler make an attempt to flush the bird, dog is not supposed to rush in for the flush/trap. They then state that if the bird moves in any way, the...

Talk to the state folks about locations of 4-10 year old logged areas in Pisgah. Buy the State's Trout book and take up fishing for them if you don't already. Pear beat me to it but I will add that if sit to flush truly helps your dogs mark the fall, you will save time others might be spending running around looking for a bird the dog didn't see fall. Figured given the other activities you mentioned and the fact that they are labs that retrieve to hand wo...

Welcome to the Board. I compete in BDC with my setter and host both pointing and flushing events. If your dogs can find birds and retrieve them to hand, you can compete. If you can shoot well and your dogs work quickly, you can compete and do well :) Shots missed will hurt you more than anything els...

I teach it. Really helped my old Britt on pheasants. Would have waited till the second season with my current ES as I occasionally run her in NSTRA and any step hurts points. Bout 1/2 the time she won't go in without repeated command. What that means is that half the time she breaks! What I think h...

It is possible to run in Tournaments or NSTRA and keep your dog at the MH level but typically easier to do the AKC training first and add other events when that behaviors is ingrained. Part of the problem lies in events that require the dog to retrieve vs events that DQ a dog for pursuing a bird tha...

I would suggest Skeet or cylander in the first barrel. You want quick shots to keep retrieve time from being burdonsome and no need to let them get a chance at getting behind something. Second barrel is up to you. Think about if you plan to needit for a second shot (IC) or if you can make long shots...
