Grouse evidently can be raised in captivity but just like other birds, pen raising to wild transition loses most of them.

Sounds like a great time! Had my first MI trip last year. Sadly it will take you the rest of your life and a lot of hill climbing to find 150 Ohio grouse! Makes it a great treasure when you do though.

Can't see if the Mauser has a scope but the 770 does and a 270 will have twice the range of the old 8x57 catridge with less drop. Would cost more than $100 to drill and tap and but any scope.

Sat was a tough day for dogs. Only 8 of 18 Open Pointing runs even found all 3 of their birds and only 2 of the 7 Amateurs. The Delaware dog training area is about 50 minutes from my house, Fairchilds Preserve in W Liberty about 20. I'll check if he has pheasants ready yet. Might not sit real tight but she won't catch one once flushed! Scout needs some running, fat, lazy summer dog.

Grouse, roosters, and quail we sometimes count days per find instead of finds per day. Not too many days I can't find at least a hen pheasant if really looking. Maybe the dogs appreciate the finds more when they are scarce, I know we hunters do! LK, I get that the dog is staunch all the way through ...

Using a 6 yr old Columbia with a neoprene yoke that helps when it's getting heavy (more often water than birds). Sierra Trading Post occasionally has them pretty cheap and Cabelas carries them.

I would suggest Skeet or cylander in the first barrel. You want quick shots to keep retrieve time from being burdonsome and no need to let them get a chance at getting behind something. Read carefully the wording on the rule too. UFTA rules state "All dogs must be registered with a traceable pedigree." If the rule just required registration, you could take a nuetered rescue and have it approved for limited registration by AKC based on a vet or known breeder saying it was purebred.
