I used to spend my summers as a kid on the north shore of LI, in Rocky Point. My grandparents lived out there. But the winters were special. because only the yearrounders were there and the sound was so much different at that time of the year. I was back there two summers ago and was amazed at how l...

DGFavor- I hunt with two cross breeds, a ten year old pointer X lab and a three year old brit X lab. Both point and retrieve on water and land and the older is a hunting machine. The younger one is just now coming into her own.

First sharpie hunt

Got out the first time this year hunting sharptails. Went out with a buddy from work that just retired. We went north of IF and saw lots of birds but they were flushing wildly. Getting up 50 to 60 yards ahead of the dogs. The wind was really blowing and my buddy and I were only able to get one apiec...

If you're willing to drive a little further, both N. Utah and S.E. Idaho have lots of public land and usually good populations of forest grouse, both blues and ruffs. As a bonus Idaho has season for sharptails in October.

While I have to admit that the eastern ruff's are far more of a challenge than our ruffs here in Idaho, in my opinion "partridge hunting" back in New England pales compared to chukar hunting out here. And hunting chukars in the breaks of the Salmon, Snake and Clearwater Rivers is the ultimate surviv...

From my trips over to the westside this year I haven't seen alot of chukars but the California quail population has been above average. As for the waterfowl hunting, if it gets cold (below 15 degrees) for a stretch, the Snake River in the area south of Boise and Mtn Home is definitely the place to be.

If you want a dog that is an all around hunter in a small package so that is doesn't tip your canoe I might suggest a Boykin Spaniel. They have a high prey drive, are intelligent and easy to train. They are natural retrievers and can withstand colder conditions. They are cute little dogs that also m...

If you get any Huns, skin one or two and give the hides to a fly tying buddy and you'll have a friend for life. The body feathers are highly sought after for tying nymph patterns.

If you decide to come out farther let me know. Idaho has all kinds of public hunting land for chukar, quail, huns, grouse(all three forest, sharpies and sage) and even pheasants.

I lived in Winnemucca for 8 years and hunted chukars from the beginning of the season in Oct to the end in January every year. Unless you are hunting north of Elko, zero degrees is about as cold as it will get. Snow normally doesn't last long into the day unless you get a real dumping. The south fac...

Blues tend to be close to Doug Fir or other true firs at mid to upper slopes most years but this year in eastern Idaho I've found them at lower elevations near water due to our drought. They are still found close to large coniferous trees however. The ruffs I'm finding this year are in aspen thicket...

Robby, that's how I do it. I'm luckly enough to live in the spud growing country of Idaho and me riding and the dogs running gets all of us in shape for bird season. We usually do 8 miles a day, 3-4 times a week. We've cut back now due to the unreal heat we are experiencing this year but still get o...

Skunk encounter

I was exercising my dogs, a pointer and Brit. and they had an encounter with a skunk. After getting them home I used a recipe for removing the scent that really worked on both the long and shorthaired dogs. I found it on the web and I think it is now pretty well known and alot more desireable than t...

Ross IV Something I have found out that works real well for getting both me and my dogs in shape, is to run them while I ride a bicycle. You have to have a safe area without alot ot traffic and you have to teach your dog to heel and stay with you but it has worked for me. I live in the spud growing ...
