Re: South Dakota / ND self guided help
Full disclosure: Huron sponsors my show, but I also hunt there for fun a lot. They've got a good system for hooking you up with landowners who lease by the day, offer guiding, and they also have a big supply of public and private land open to hunt free. Go to hunthuronsd.com and fill in the form - t...

What do you want to hunt and what time of year? Miles City often has good sharptail numbers but don't know yet about this year. Lewistown is also a good home base. Area biologists are usually helpful, and so are some of the web pages they will likely refer you to. Good luck.

Yep, Montana for easiest public access to private land and plenty of public ground. Do your homework on the Block Mgt. scheme well in advance - many places only allow a few hunters per day and you can usually reserve your dates. See you there.

Re: Why won't this backing dog (machine) work?
Found the 9-volt batt powering the receiver. But that wouldn’t have anything to do with the power of the servo would it? I’m wondering if a little lube, loosening some nuts or something might be all it takes.

Why won't this backing dog (machine) work?
So, Innotek sent me one of those remote-controlled backing dogs many years ago. It worked fine for years. Dusted it off recently and it tries really hard to cycle, but just can't get enough "oomph" in it to move the dog - the arm/servo seems to be cycling, but after that, nada. Any suggestions?

I second the nomination of Rivett's Refuge, though not sure if their insurance allows self-guided hunting. Many lodges won't any more. You might also look at Warne Ranch near Pierre, Ringneck Retreat near Hitchock, Double P Ranch, R&R Pheasants near Seneca, Jim River Ranch near Redfield. All are les...

There are no chukars in Oregon, Idaho or Nevada. What many hunters describe as wingbeats in the distance are really rattlesnakes trying to scare off the mountain lions. I would focus completely on Wyoming, Maine, and Florida. The latter two states offer plenty of easy walking on flat ground, too. Al...

Glyco charge is an excellent product. It's a post exercise supplement to help the muscles regroup quicker. Great product to feed after exercise when you know you are going to have the dog out again the next day. Needs to be fed within a half hour of exercise. I'm not sure if it would help much in b...

I put my dogs on the training table, in a "whoa." Pick up one foot flexed back (as if running), and treat after every clip for a few weeks. If it's really dicey, feed them while you're trimming. Eventually, treat or praise every second nail, etc. until you offer one or two when done. I think the fac...

I'm not judging. There are no bad dogs, only bad owners. But in a club situation or group hunt, I would also wonder if other hunters would be leery of putting their prized pooch on the ground with a fighting breed. Just sayin'.

Try holding a block of ice in your mouth for a while. That's what you're asking a dog when you use frozen birds.
