Re: Not Pointing Grouse

Maybe a better use for this amount of space would be for every one to give some advice on grouse hunting strategy. If a dog will look for and point and bring back a stinky "bleep" pigeon it will hunt any bird i'm sure.

Re: SOme FF work with the pup

I cant speak for this method but my impression of force retrieve is that the force is what compels the dog to comply with the command . The end game is a dog that will retrieve from water when its cold, continue to search when its hot and bring home the game. I force retrieve trained my 2 year old s...

Re: Platform

when I use a place board the board is only big enough for the dog to get four feet on. It is used only after the dog has stood still on a a barrel The idea is to break down into a sequence the whoa command. The dog learns in small steps which helps the dog learn the command in a manageable fashion ....

It sounds like you are getting some great advice . Although it is impossible to know what is going on here without seeing the dog. The whole point of the place board is to make it easier for the dog not the trainer. Since dogs are place oriented they learn faster when they have a visual cue.

Re: Dog passing live birds

I think you may just have a conditioning problem. You said the terrain is difficult. Dogs breath simultaneously through their mouth and nose. This allows them to scent while they are running. When a dog goes into oxygen debt it only breaths through its mouth and loses the ability to scent. Fit dog =...

I don't understand what you mean by a crutch? If you have a broken leg a crutch would seem to me to be a pretty good thing. So when your a dog needs a little help understanding a complex problem , " In the dogs mind" why not give a little help. It is far easier for a dog to understand whoa from a pl...

Re: Any recommendations on a no chew spray?

Dogs chew for a variety of reasons. You might say it is a priority in their mind, and it is natural and necessary. Why not stop the dog from chewing what you don't want it to chew and give it something that is okay to chew. So far you have allowed the dog to chew the comforter that is your dogs firs...

It has a good section on house training. Although it does not consider training for hunting dogs it will ...

Re: Controlling Range

I think everyone here gave you great advice. One thing i might add is that dogs do not generalize easy and they are place oriented . What this means is you need to train your dog for each command in different places. He or she will not understand what you want in the field when it was only taught in...

Re: Need Help Training my GSP to Point...

it seems to me that all of these solutions rely on a correction with the check cord or a dependence on the loose bird not being caught by the dog. If you teach your dog to whoa then you can bring the dog in on a check cord to the launcher, command whoa ,launch bird do this first with no scent. The do...

sometimes the dog is transmitter wise change the picture that the dog sees . Put the transmitter in your pocket so the dog does not see it. Re: From Blinking to outright shutdown

Ruffshooter I know what George would say about the dog getting to close to the launcher. Never use the launch bird as the scent bird. Bury a lockwing bird in grass 5 yards out from the launcher It has worked great for me you just need to make sure the dog cannot see it. This sets the launcher far en...

I also think you have to read what vagabonder wrote in the original post. He said the dog had a bird flush in its face maybe this is the reason the dog is blinking . One of the things that george taught me was to guarantee the outcome. That is what my suggestion does. By bringing the dog on a checkcord a good distance from the bird and saying whoa and releasing a bird the dog geets a positive bird contact with out having a chance to blink. This does not take any...

Dogs learn by association, sometimes the association we are trying to give the dog is not what the dog gets. it sounds to me like the dog is associating the bird with something bad perhaps a correction while it was on point . You may have done this unintentionally, and it is probably best to find ou...

Fly away drills are for geting your dog to point There is no need to have him retrieve at this point (no pun intended). If the dog is not steady to wing allowing him to break wil only add baggage later. what you want to do is point drills.Use a scent bird with mulltiple launchers . Place the launche...
