Re: Noticed a little limp

This is why we don't test hips until 2 yrs old.. One other thing to look for is fungus. I fought it for 6 months this season thinking that I had a splinter or minor injury and only figured it out when it transferred to another foot. 3 days of treating it with Betadine fixed my 6 month headache. The ...

Re: Another LTD stakes ??

In your second post you mentioned running more than 2 stakes but didn't wanna "pi$$ someone of if you should win. Nobody will get pissed if you enter any Limited stake because that is where finished dogs should run. They do get upset at guys running finished dogs in AGD or OGD though.

Re: Another LTD stakes ??

It doesn't matter if your Pro or Amatuer,'it is considered bad form to run finished dogs in stakes other than AA or limited stakes. If you Want experience, start scouting and run in limited stakes. You won't be very popular otherwise. ( even though that may not be a concern for you)

After almost 30yrs of training, guiding and owning Labs I accidentally ended up getting a Vizsla and I can honestly say that I will always have V's in my future. I may have other breeds as well but I will always have Vizsla's. Wonderful family dogs (there is a reason why they call them "Velcro dogs"...

Casey- I only come on here using my phone so I don't post things as detailed as Huston. I wasn't saying that the Dingo was the first dog but many modern pure breds derived from them. . I know of a new breed in Russia that still breeds back to them for their nose. My main point was trying to get peop...

I haven't tried that but agility only lasts for a matter of seconds so I don't think that is a reliable source of info. Out of the ingredients you listed only the glucose would have any affect within several hours.

Re: What Constitutes a Breeding Program?

A chihuahua is 99.8% related to a Great Dane so how much difference is there between any pure breed. Therefore, if you breed a Pure breed to the same pure breed it would take many generations to breed out(or in) a certain quality. All pure breeds go back to either the Dingo or Grey Wolf and it's tak...

Re: Whoa question

Teach a second command such as whoa or wait. Sit/stay is completely different and should not be associated with the field. As a young dog learns it can feel pressure and when it gets too much it will revert to what it knows to gain approval and often it will sit.

Dogs are at there highest capacity for endurance 18 hrs after their last meal. Since they burn fat mostly for endurance that meal should be high in protein and fat. Now, dogs also burn sugars for short periods so vanilla cream cookies gives short bursts. So yes, there are things you can do to help. ...

Ezzy, if your thinking is correct than we don't need to teach a lab to retrieve because it's instinctive? Our job as trainers is to set up the dog to have success not failure. Training a dog means doing whatever you can to ensure success which in turn builds confidence.

I line them up and tap them on the head. I train using verbal commands at the start and add in the tap later.

I don't use the word "fetch" though. It's just easier to teach backing if I don't use the same command as everyone else. The word "fetch" means nothing to my dogs.

Just treat it like a real firearm and declare it at the counter. It must be in a lockable approved case and you will have to demonstrate that it isn't loaded. It is not a firearm but if you don't treat it as such and they see it on the Xray, your bag will be pulled. I travel with guns all the time a...

Re: got a gsp that doesnt like small feathers! what to do?

If he likes to fetch other objects (just not ones with feathers) make that fun and get him to know what the command means. If he doesn't mature into retrieving birds, it will only make FF easier if that's what you decide to do. Whatever you decide to do, stop trying to let him retrieve anything with...

I didn't see anyone talking about taking chase out. in fact, it's their reward for establishing point. Set them up for success, don't just go out launching birds in the "hope" that he gets it. Teach him to point before the launcher is introduced. Over use of a launcher on a young dog is a recipe for...

5 months is by no means too young to teach a dog to point. Heck, in another month he can be competing in Puppy stakes and Jr. Hunt tests. Keep it short, fun and make sure that you can control the situation. Just taking a young dog out and launching birds or taking it out on wild birds hoping that it...
