Re: Inbreeding or Linebreeding?
I don't know the correct terminology but it is commonly done. I would have no hesitation in taking a puppy from this kind of breeding. In fact, the best dog that I have ever owned had only one grand dam.

Re: How old for e-collar?
Yes, this seems reasonable. My puppies start wearing an ecollar as soon as their necks are big enough. I put it on them and turn it on each time they go to the field, I usually don't even carry the transmitter. i would estimate that they have worn the collar one hundred times before they are ever sh...

Source for pigeons
I read a lot of posts on here that people have a lot of trouble finding a source for pigeons. I thought I might pass along a tip that may help someone. I don't know if this is true everywhere by where I live there are three, that I know of, weekly livestock auctions within an hour of my house. Along...

Re: planting birds for puppy (need to reuse birds)
I use a pigeon pole like you are talking about. I push a piece of rebar in to the ground and then slide a piece of pvc pipe over the rebar. I don't remember the size of the rebar or pipe, but just go to the hardware store and find two pieces that fit. The piece of pvc pipe does two things, it gets t...

Re: pointing rabbits
When he points a rabbit, just move on and don't say a word. With enough time and birds, he will forget about the rabbits.

Watch for blood and swelling. Some times the female will keep herself licked clean and the blood will be hard to see. It can easily be seen when she urinates on a concrete kennel floor. When you see blood you need to seperate her for three weeks, and I would still watch very closely for a couple of ...

Does anyone know the story about Doc Nitchman and Robert Wehle. Wasn't there a lawsuit over the ownership of Elhew Strike? Maybe I have it all wrong, I don't know.

Carry a few pigeons in a sack with you, if you have access to pigeons. Periodically while running the pup, call her to you and when she gets to you, toss a pigeon out of the sack. A couple of sessions of this and you will have no trouble calling her in. I did have a couple of pointer puppies about t...

Re: GSP initial training
Two things that I do not see mentioned yet. When you are running her in the woods or fields let her get out from you a little ways and then step behind a tree/bush and be quiet. Make her find you. Change directions frequently and do not say anything. Again, make her find you. Later in life, you want...

Re: weight question for 14 month old Lab
Dogs are just like people, they all have different metabolisms. I had a young pointer a few years ago that ate four times as much as the other pointers that I had. He would also eat it faster than the other dogs. I turned three horses out on grass this spring, two of them got fat and the other one l...

Re: stud dog
Your best chance to get a Stud quality pup is to keep all the males till they are a couple years old, then sell the others as started or finished dogs.
I agree with this statement, except that you need to breed ten litters and keep and evaluate all of the males.

You should either put the dog down, or give it to someone that does not have children and very specifically explain to them what happened. If you choose to keep the dog, please have his canine teeth pulled.

Re: Endurance Question
I had an English Pointer that was like this. He would run hard for ten or fifteen minutes and then just settle in to a fast walk. It really drove me crazy. I solved the problem by giving him away. His new owner loves it.
