I echo alot of Ray G's post. I have done several things to increase the fat in my dog's diet during hunting season. Dyne is one product I use. This is another. http://www.nationaldogfood.com/energy.html, and I have switched to Inukshuk 32/32 as well. I was not after an increase in protein, but rathe...

Robert, I have a library of Bill Hillman's DVDs. Excellent products and I really enjoy learning from him and his approach. But he is absolutely in a minority in the US at the moment. I was a blank slate when first exposed to "Magic Brushpile". I watched it numerous times looking to learn something, as well as I went to Mr. Higgins blog to read what he provided there. Unless this is limited only to cheerleading, my reaction remains several fold. The videos very often does not mat...

BIll T, The pros are alot better at FF than are an amateur training a few dogs such as myself. Bill T, I think the questions you ask indicate the answer. Yes, I think Pro Trainers find the FF programs they use produce results faster than PR based methods. Key to that is the Pros are most often brought dogs at 10 or more months of age which often have missed out on all the excellent early deve...

Re: fencing and wild birds
You can develop an excellent wild bird meat dog using all wild birds and OB work in the yard, then carried over to the field. Your dog can well be a standout at hunting for, finding, pointing and recovering downed birds using that approach alone. I did it with my first GWP. But if you desire polish ...

Re: VIDEO: Learning That Steadiness Pays Off
On the theme of good pointing dogs don't need a retrieve, I think that varies quite a bit with the Breed. I find my GWPs absolutely benefit from a retrieve. To the degree that I find establishing clear linkage in the dog's head at an early age, that stopping at first scent, pointing and holding a po...

I have also been using the e-collar for recall on my 2 year male old EP, I use the tone for the dog to come all they way back to me and heel, and I use the vibrate to get the dog to turn or at least look for me when I change directions and both of these work pretty darn good.....but, I seem to need...

Just goes to show how opinions vary. I have several friends who all swear by their Montfeltros. I train my puppies to recall to voice, whistle and the tone on the ecollar in that order. Another vote for Air-washed. I program my puppies from the start to excel at recovering downed game, but the occasional instance where the dog cannot get scent on a downed bird happens. Sometimes the bird is laying in a low spot where the air does not seem to move its scent. Sometimes it is impossib...

Back when I hunted some pen raised birds, I still refused to hunt them when it was raining or very wet in the cover. Pen raised birds cannot fly when their feathers get wet and it brings out the worst in the dog work.

Winter Roosters
Winter has set in. The grass waterways that yielded pointed birds earlier in the season are empty now. The pheasants are flocked up in the heavy cover - Tree Rows, Cattails and Kochia Weed Patches. Close range hens flushed off of points outnumber the roosters by 10:1 or more. A few roosters hold for...
