Re: Let's talk gun's . Does it matter to you ?
We shouldn't care what gun preference others bring to the field...We all have more important battles to fight such as protecting our rights to hunt. Anyway off the soap box....I don't carry a auto loader cause I waste enough shell with my O/U!

Re: Strap Vest?
Wing Works seems to get a lot of yea's...it does look like a good strap vest, but you might check your blaze orange requirement in your
State. The vest doesn't meet requirement in my State and I would have to supplement more than twice amount of blaze orange.

Agree with Doc E....What breed of dog do you have OP? Reason I'm asking is my English Setter needs a mid day snack for low blood sugar. I've heard male ES have a history with low blood sugar.

Re: upcoming season preparedness
I take a few 3-5 day hunts per season....3-5 days is just as much my limit as the dogs. My dog is usually to hyped-up to eat in the a.m. on hunt day. I will let him eat as much as he wants, after getting back from the hunt....he's not much of a overeater though. I do give him a couple squirts of nut...

Re: Reward for honoring?
CJ.... Sounds like you have a great breeding program. My dogs' been in the field with quite a few dogs that didn't have honoring bred into them, also have hunted with quite a few pointing dogs that weren't to interested in retrieving (mine included) They needed FF. You're right I do have to flush bi...

Re: Reward for honoring?
Just curious...as to why you reward for backing on a pointing dog with a retrieve... isn't honoring a big part of pointing dog training? All the pointing dogs I've had are more interested in going on to find more birds than retrieving them ( seems retrieving is secondary to them) of course the retri...

Re: Dog eats almost nothing
Setters are weird when it comes to eating. I can throw a cup of food in the dish and it might be there for a day. Take them on a hunting trip and you can hardly get them to eat....I take a tube of Nutri-Cal with me hunting and give my dog a couple doses to keep energy up. Your dog weighting in at 27...

Re: Thinking of getting a new beeper collar
I also have a Dogtra 2500, before the 2500 I had the model that had a beeper separate from the receiver. I like the 2500 it has some nice features, but the range seems shorter than the previous collar. I have to wear the 2500 high on my shoulder to get good range from it....not a big deal for me, bu...

LOL...nope I haven't tried one of those china e-collars and I'm sure I won't buy one...anyway maybe I'll spend the $37 on Chinese beer so I won't be labeled a china hater....based one study of one.

Re: Would anyone like to sell me a used e-collar?
Saw an add on e-bay for a NEW e-collar from china. On transmitter with buzz variable shock and collar selection. Comes with TWO waterproof receiver collars. WOW $37.00 dollars. almost make me want to buy one just to see what it is. I think for $37 I'd give them a shot! I waste more money than that ...

Re: Upland boots
I bought a pair of irish setter havoc boots last year...I think their similar to the wingshooter. The boots are light weight and comfortable and I don't feel I have to hurry and get them off after a long day in the field. I will be surprised if they last more than a few seasons, but for the price I ...

Re: Letting your dog around your quail pen?
I have wild quail in our neighborhood and my dog is always into them. I'll find him on point while working out in the yard, after awhile I'll either flush the birds or release him...cause the birds usually have moved on. I haven't seen where this is has been a problem at all.... I just can't see the...

Re: Advice on how to hunt 2 males together
Probably works, but if your hunting pheasants in the later part of the season plan on walking a long way before you find birds. Slamming a truck door will send birds out of the field. I have hunting buddy that had a knothead that wanted to posture and mount other dogs during the start or finish of a...

Re: What type of shotgun?
There you go ....finding a gun that fits or having it fitted to you is the more important than the type of gun, also important to me anyways, if you plan on walking great distances while hunting is the weight of the gun....they seem to get heavier towards the end of the day. JWNissen - I live just a...

Re: testing a dogs nose
Very true the wild birds are the best for developing a hunting dog... especially pheasants. You'll know your dog if figuring them out when it starts backtracking to pick up scent from the wily rooster that slips back past you.

I haven't hunted along I-90, but I woundn't spend much time researching anything from Missuola west unless youre planning on grouse hunting. Areas off Hwy 2 east of the Rockies to N. Dakota I find good bird hunting. A couple of winters ago Montana lost alot of upland birds in many areas due to weath...

Are you paying attention to wind direction? Running a dog with the wind or dry scenting conditions I find cause dogs to bump birds.
