Re: Help plan my road trip

How could you go west without targeting Chukars? The Chukar, Hun and Quail Season doesn't end until the end of Jan. There's plenty of time to target the easy birds (Everything else besides Chukar) but there's nothing like bird hunting the Snake River country around H*ll's Canyon and Brownlee, Idaho...

Re: Blank Pistol Caliber

I think I will graduate her to 12 gauge popper loads at some point. And frankly, carrying a shotgun in the field is good training/conditioning for me. And most of us! PS: When I ran more regularly than I do now, every once in a while if I was feeling 10 ft. tall and bulletproof, I'd try to follow m...

And kids are (almost) always welcome at NAVHDA events! They might be your best helper.

Re: Trainer around OR, anyone?

I have enjoyed working with Don Hewes at Olex Preserve near Arlington, OR. I made a couple TV shows with him.

He has some very unique ideas about dog training that make sense. Don't know how many dogs he takes, but you should get to know him.

Re: Blank Pistol Caliber

I would think at some point, blank shotgun shells in a "real" gun would help. There is a big difference between a one-handed pop gun and a handler swinging a long gun at a flying bird. LC Supply will sell you 12 ga.

I am far from an expert, but whatever route you choose, I've got some observations on this subject at my blog. Every little bit helps! Good luck.

Re: Trying to pinpoint what's wrong

There are plenty of great advisors in here, with much better insights than I, but I'd say you've got a couple problems, maybe more. But don't give up. I'll defer to them, but I might suggest you've jumped a bit too far ahead too quickly. Others will probably suggest earlier and more frequent bird co...

Re: Tick removal

Just be careful about applying hydrocortisone ... some dogs (mine included) react poorly to some steroids and it can scare the heck out of you!

All great ideas, everybody. Thank you. Keep the suggestions coming! I'm starting to run my radio show trivia contest at my blog - $25 Cabela's gift certificate to the winner each week so check in regularly. Can't have too much stuff from the world's foremost outfitter! PS: Just been asked to be mast...

Don't leave home without ...

That's the question I'm asking, looking toward my long wingshooting road trip this fall. Besides the usual stuff, what wouldn't you go without? And for your dog, too. My personal must-have is the Peet shoe dryer. If you haven't experienced warm boots in the morning, you haven't lived. What's in your...

Re: Just booked lodging in NH

I am so jealous. We spent a few days up there several summers ago, and enjoyed learning about the grouse hunting from the proprietor of Tall Timber Lodge. Great meals there, by the way. Hope that's where you're staying. They offer guide services, I think. Squam Lake has some great fishing (you proba...

Just think how many girls a German Wirehair would attract! Nothing like a beard and bushy eyebrows to attract women of taste and distinction.

Re: Looking for a state and outfitter for a grouse hunt??

Beyond half-blind deer hunters, there are a couple other risks for your dog and possibly you: ticks and wolves. Maybe you've read the story about the guy running his dogs in the woods of (I think) Wisconsin and losing one to a pack of wolves. Most grouse stories end up mentioning ticks, so be prepar...

Re: Help plan my road trip

Lots of great ideas, everyone. Thanks. Greg, I know exactly what you mean about watching other people hunt. I've tried to change that perception with What the Dogs Taught Me (search at YouTube) for sample videos from the show). That said, I will deal with some of the more practical stuff on my trip ...

Help plan my road trip

Hey everyone, Dirty job, but someone's got to do it. Looks like I've got a sponsor willing to send me on an extensive, multi-stage hunting trip this fall. I will be filing weekly reports from the road on my Field & Stream radio show, on my blog, and will probably shoot some video for my newest TV se...

We learn as much from our dogs as we teach them, if only we'll open our eyes and our minds. My next book will be about all the things my dogs have taught ME!

Re: Tips for Hunt Tests

Have fun. I was lucky enough to figure this out the day before a NAVHDA natural ability test ... train too hard, and your frustration and stress are sensed by the dog. He then reflects the same attitude. By the time you're at the test, the learning and teaching are complete and there's no point in "...
