You tell me, I havent used that method.how did #9 and rock salt work as a training aid?
But you did say:
the root of the problem lies in the breeding.
In answer to the OP
Find gun shy dogs at the local rescue. The SOLAS in Council Bluffs Iowa gets a good hunting dog in every so often.

Grandpa had setters, real nice ones, he got 200 per pup in the 30s. Grandpa was a railroad man. Dad had springers. I loved them dogs but one day in 1967 I watched a shorthair dog find, point and hold a wild bird till the person flushed it and shot it, that dog fetched the bird and put in his hand. I...

gunshy is a breeding problem, not a training problem Really? I do not think this is true at all. I bought a female age 9 months from a divorced gal. That dog was gun shyed by the man. Dog would run and hide when ever someone fired shot. Irun her on wild birds for 3 or 4 weeks, then one day I droppe...

Have to kill 100 or so to make the gas and expenses. Not that many around here. I still plan on the annual spring yote shoot we do call em in and cut em down.so most are in the 20.00 to 30.00 dollar range

If the price for fur goes back up folks would start trapping them again. No trapping or hunting on them due to no price for the fur means a lot of loose yotes running around looking for a meal.
We call them in with a radio caller in the spring and shoot the heck out of them.

seems they do spay heifers mainly for the same reason the steer is neutered, hormones. Read it and see if it fits for your dog or not. The reasoning I mean.

I have never heard of a spayed cow. They dont spay them, if they do not take (get pregnant) they go off to the sale barn and eventually the stores you buy meat from, not meat or butcher shops, stores like wal mart. Steers do not get as big as the bull, they get sent off to slaughter before that hap...

The thing here is, you let him up on it, every thing you do with pup is a training moment. He learned it is OK to get up there, it will be very hard to break that now. Very hard to "untrain" the dog, but maybe get pup his own pillow and place it inside his crate. He may like that if it is comfy.
