Re: Shorthairs and Natural Ability

This idea that the [insert your breed here] of today has lost it's natural ability and is harder to train shows up for every breed on these types of msg boards. I find it remarkable that people think that breeders are producing dogs that are inferior to the dogs of yore. Why would they do that??? If...

Re: hunt test

I wouldn't watch, I'd participate! In the spring there will be plenty of hunt tests in MN. Go and have a good time. Run your dog, walk the braces you are not running your dog in, network with people, see a bunch of different breeds, and see how far you get. I ran my older dog in JH last year for som...

Got the first 2 legs of my pooch's JH out of the way this weekend. Fun stuff. Two more legs to go. If I have the time to put more training in I may give SH a whirl this fall.

Hunt test question....

Hey folks, Can observers walk the braces at a hunt test (jr, sr, or master)? Or is it a judges and handlers only gig. The reason I ask is I have an aquaintance who is interested in getting a gsp and I thought next week's hunt test near Stillwater, MN would be a great place for him to watch some dogs...

Sounds great. One question. Can I enter my dog in the Saturday test and the Sunday test or is it just one run per weekend? If I can run on both days I'd prefer it.

Hey Chris, Is the GSPCMN going to have a hunt test out there the following weekend. The AKC website says the GSPCMN is having a test on April 21 & 22 but the GSPCMN website has no info on the hunt test that I could find. I plan on trying some jr. hunter tests this spring for fun and hopefully to put...

Pro gsp trainer Phil Mathiowetz is based in Goodhue, MN. He's actually about smack dab in the middle between Red Wing and Goodhue. He'd be a good place to start and he's relatively close to you. Do a google search on "Windwalker Kennels" and it should be the first in the list. He may be out of state...

You are correct. Alot of it is word of mouth and reputation. Having a famous dog on your resume doesn't hurt either. For some pro's many of their customers don't trial and they are local customers that want a good hunting dog and need it trained. If they are treated right the trainer can build up a ...

Pro's make their money training a string of dogs, not by trialing. Dog training/handling is $500+ per month. Many/most pros have 20+ dogs in their string. Being in the money at a trial isn't a guarantee and would be more akin to gambling than a sure way to earn income.
