some young labs take longer to get used to cold water than others. he has to figure it out on his own. you may try and have him watch another dog retrieve in the water over and over again and help build up his jealousy and that could help prompt him to get in the water on his own.

i would invest in a small handfull of homing pigeons and a bird launcher.......you will need to get that dog on as many birds as you can to bring out the natural point and homing pigeons work great for that.

The collar program is an involved one. The collar simply reinforces and until the dog is solid on all commands, cannot be used. What you experienced was the dog "bolting" from you, now you will have to "debolt" her. First things first though. Let her wear the collar, don't use it on her, and train ...

nothing is wrong with a dog flushing no matter the breed if that is what you are ok with. the only problem, as mentioned before, is that setters typically are very rangy dogs, sometimes 200+ yards or more and that wont work for a flushing dog. you can control and rein in a dog like that but it is ha...

I judge it by how much bird desire a dog has. If they bore in on a bird and hit them going 90mph, they're ready for a pheasant. If they run to a bird and tentatively pick it up, better hold off. Next time you're around an old pheasant dog, look at his muzzle. A pheasant can flat tear a dog up and m...
