Re: Novice FT'er, need a mentor
The beauty of this discussion is that there are so many sides to ways to do or not do things. You all can't imagine how much I have learned already! But the bottom line in the puppy stakes is for me and the pup to learn and to have fun doing it. She is/will be primarlly a hunting dog. The money tree...

Re: Novice FT'er, need a mentor
Yep, I did register w/ the AKC. Surprisingly painless! Dogirl, I am getting some great advice, and I can see what you mean. Right now all we're after is the experience and getting our feet wet. The puppy stake is first, and I will be checking to see if they'll be planting birds. Seems that most peop...

Gyp, well, I never would have come up with the meaning for that.
Ernie,
The GSP trial in Fishtrap is the one I'm planning on going to. I haven't seen anything on the Goose Butte one, but I check the AKC website now and then.
Cheers!

Re: Novice FT'er, need a mentor
Ernie, RJ is a little over an hour from me. Thanks for the suggestion. I probably won't go to many puppy trials, there just aren't that many close by. Basically I just want to try it out. I'll get ahold of the trial secretary and see if they'll be planting birds. And I keep seeing "gyp". What is tha...

Thanks, all, for the replies, pm and in the thread. I'll be having questions for you, that's for sure! Topher40, you gave me some food for thought (and worry). I respect your opinion, having read many of your posts. Cam's a pretty bold, and very independent little gal. I've run her a few times with ...

Novice FT'er, need a mentor
I'm going to enter my EP in AKC puppy stakes this spring. There. I put in writing. 8) Now I have to do it! I've read the rules, but I have some questions on procedures and perhaps a little in the way of training, and probably will have more, as I ponder what I have just committed to. I'd really like...

Re: to smell or not to smell (a dead dog)
First, I'm sorry for your parents' loss. I too have heard of instances where the remaining dog pack was allowed to see/sniff the dog. And of instances where they weren't and didn't understand where the other dog had gone. I don't see how it would hurt. I let my GWP see my Akita when she died. I gues...

I've got a pair of XC ski gloves that I love: Fleece (or something like it) on the tops and leather on the palm side including fingers. They fit perfectly, and I can do anything from loading my shotgun to tying my boot laces with them on. They're pretty waterproof (altho we don't get as much rain as...

All Age
I understand the difference between AA and SD and what they mean as applied to trials.
I'm curious tho, and trying to fill in some blanks in my (limited) trial knowledge, how/why did the term "All Age" come to be?

Re: 20 ga poppers
They're just a less-noisy, less kick shell as opposed to a regular 20 ga shell.
I was thinking it might be a little better to use when gun-breaking the pup.

20 ga poppers
My dad and I were talking dogs the other day, and he mentioned he was loading up some 16 ga poppers for a guy. He was using less powder, of course, and white rice. I've got a 20 ga. Anyone know if poppers are made for that gauge (my dad didn't know of anyone) and where to get them? Alternately, anyo...

Re: Not getting my pigeons
I've got a trap set out in the back yard after they started coming to the bird feeder. I use black oil sunflower seed, and sometimes sprinkle some cracked corn or scratch grains on top of the pile in the trap. It's kind of spendy but I catch all the birds I want, some over and over again (one in par...

Never, not in a million years! I can live without a man much easier than I could live without my dogs. I had a repairman over to fix my water pressure relief valve once, and had an Akita at that time. While he was petting her, he said he'd given up his Golden for his soon-to-be wife. He had th...

Re: How in the world does my Viz smell mice?
One of my wires loves bees. I found her sniffing a honeybee carcass (all the insides were gone, it was just the shell, head, and wings) on the patio one day. I picked it up and when she wasn't looking, threw it in a hollow planter stand a few feet away. A minute later she had her head in the opening...

I love bringing pups through those experiences! How much fun for you! Everything is new and everything is a wonder in its own right to them. Along with many of the others already mentioned, I loved East of the Mountains, by David Guterson. It's set in the area of my stomping grounds, Eastern Washington. Good read. I have a dog who had been stung by a yellowjacket when she was a pup (about 4 or 5 months old) while we were hiking in the woods. We both got it, actually. They were in the ground I guess. To this day she is afraid of bees. She doesn't bolt, but she is very wary of them....and her tail does go down ...

In addition to many of the items already mentioned, I bring color photocopies of current pictures of my dogs.
