Re: lyme disease
My setter showed signs of Lyme in mid-December. The only tick that I know attached to my setter was picked off in early to mid September. So that is about 3 months between tick bite and showing symptoms.

My setter had Lyme disease while on the vaccine and being treated with Frontline Plus. For the next couple years the vet said he'd feel like he was stealing from me if I gave my setter the vaccine. After the dog trial this weekend, which my setter got 2nd in the Open Shooting Dog, I took my dog out with my father and his brittanies. We found several quail and a lot of them were in some thick nasty cover. Getting the birds to flush out of there was difficult. Here's one of the many points. http...

I have a remote backing dog and it really helped my setter. I still use my father's brittanies to help train backing, but the remote backing dog offered a more controlled setting and I could train by myself.

The third video is a quail that runs at my setter and then flushes right at my setter. Like the last video this has happened with wild birds, but it is not common and I really can't plan for it. With poor flying pen raised quail this is a lot more common. I happened twice this afternoon. Now I wasn'...

Reason Why I like Pen Raised Birds
The trial I had been planning on attending this weekend was cancelled due to weather so I decided to take some quail and do some training instead. I'd much rather run on wild birds, but pen raised birds offer some challenges that wild birds rarely offer a dog. Below are three videos from today that ...

Re: Difference in training a retriever and pointing breed
I train my labs to the highest level there is. I train with experienced "field trialers" as well as "hunt test" groups. AKC retriever field trials don't involve/require any kind of upland hunting, nor does AKC hunt tests, but NAHRA and UKC retriever hunt tests do in the upper levels. In the "off" s...

Keeping a dog in gun range is far from total control. The retrievers I grew up with and my current retriever often stay in gun range without having to whistle or call them in. There is a lot more cooperation than control.ezzy333 wrote:To keep them in gun range is the main reason.

If the dog is not near the other dog on point then blinking wouldn't be an issue. A blinking dog won't be near the other dog for very long - or it wouldn't be a blink. So.... non-issue. If the dog is close enough to potentially be in harms way, it is close enough to be stopped with a whoa regardless of whether it has seen or is aware of the other dog pointing. I love a poor flying pen raised bird for training bird manners.
