Re: pulling or roading age
I routinely road puppies(pointers) from about 6-7 moths of age. I do it on foot using a harness and weightlifter's back belt.and quit the moment the pup stops pulling. I often do it in the summer to build physical strength, endurance and heat tolerance. Never had a problem. RayG +1, I've got a 6 mo...

Re: Difference between a 1hr vs 30 minute dog
I think going at trial speeds for 30 minutes isn't that hard for many trial dogs that get some regular exercise, but to go for an hour requires some training. I notice it most when after a long winter where the dogs don't get as much exercise as when there's not a bunch of snow on the ground I need ...

Re: bell and whistle questions
With the britts I work with they only wear a bell when hunting, trialing or training. My setter is the same way. I was out this weekend running the dogs and they wore bells. I have never had an issue with bells and finding birds. I have had an issue with handling without a bell in heavy cover. It's ...

One point he did make is his dog is a careful hunter, my LM can be meticulous almost to the extreme I would not call him careful at all . Depending on how much snow we get on Monday you may need snow shoes. I just finished a week plus of grouse hunting and as mentioned above the mixed forests is the way to go right now. I'm a big fan of a bell. You can tell so much more about you dog with a bell than you can with a beeper. As others have said, the bell goes silent on a point so finding a dog on point isn't as easy as it is with a beeper.

I've hunted behind ground sniffers and they do find grouse and can hold grouse. A lot of people don't realize how much grouse run, especially later in the season and, I strongly believe a faster moving dog will better be able to hold a running grouse. Ground sniffers in my experience are slower movi...

Thing with with hunting grouse with a pointer is that they may point one 150 yards away. If the bird holds until you get there, they are jittery as heck and may flush a ways out. With a flusher, as soon as he starts making game, you're on his tail. The speed of the tail tells you how close the bird...
