Re: Ramblings on the Coming Grouse Season
This is going to be my first grouse season with a pointing dog. She's an EP pup just turning 1. Got her at 8 mo's old. not really sure what to expect from her the first year, and I'm trying not to get my hopes up. We're both still learning... I was wondering if some of the more experienced fellers c...

Re: Cow Bell Training....I guess!
First time I put a bell on my pointer she stood holding her neck out so it wouldn't ring for over half an hour... it was hilarious. didn't want to torment her tho' so I got a tiny little one that was small and just made a little sound. I let her wear it all day around the house. She didn't lik...
Re: e collar
Dogtra & Sportdog both make good collars I'm sure. don't knock 'em a bit. But I just went thru your same delema. I have done a ton of looking, asking and checking on all types of collars. In the end I went with the Tritronics Sport Basic G3. Same as you, I didn't want to break the bank. Lion Country...

Any dog that you put the effort and TIME into... pick one that fits what, and where you are hunting, find a reputable breeder and put the effort into building on what they bred... You can get the best bred dog in the world, but if you don't put in the time and effort, it won't be a good hunting dog,...

very true!.. it's tuff to do, but well worth it by the time the dog is two years old... plus when you start putting him on birds, the morning seems to be better IMHO because the scent holds better... the dogs seem to catch on or figgure it out just a little quicker... at least that seems to be the c...

Keep your sessions short and always end on a good note... if you end your session and feel like you could have pushed it a little farther... you ended on time. Don't over do it. If the dog is learrning quickly, you may be able to do a session in the morning and one in the evening, but just let the p...

TRAINING TABLE QUESTION
I have a question about the use of a training table... my pointer pup hates it, but that's typical from everything I've read & been told. I can't get her to jump up on it at all and have to physically place her on it. Once she's on it, she is workable... but if it's in the yard, she won't even go an...

I see in my last post that I should have also added that timidness is not her only issue. She seems to have a mind of her own and is very good at ignoring commands... The will to please does not seem very strong, but I am attributing alot of that to her early development or lack of it... I hope to s...

Advice is the most dangerous gift one can give... and most perilous gift to receive... I think it's best to make up your own mind based on what you see and experience. I'm sure some dogs are washouts, but perhaps they may have been a passable grouse dog to another hunter. It depends on what you want...

You're right the New York side is largely overlooked and it does have alot to offer. Have some friends that hunt deer across the border, but I can't say about the grouse.
