Pros
You could call Carol Nyholm of Roaring Wind Kennels. Carol's number in Babbitt, MN. is 218-827-3255. Carol hunts, trains and breeds Britts. I don't know how active she is these days but she may be able to hook you up with another pro. more local than Texas. You could also contact "Wagonmaster" (on t...

Nothing like the northen prairies in the wintertime. Four generations of my family were born in GF including my oldest son. I'm a graduate of UND. Filled up with gas many times in Wilton. I was in Bemidji on Sat. - that was life threatening weather. It was 27 below just north of here in Virginia las...

Chest protector
I use the strapped, open top version for ventilation. In the past three years of heavy use it rubbed off fur at two of the back straps only one time in zero degree weather when I had the straps a little two tight.

New Pointer
Tell the breeder you're looking for a great family pet that will hunt a few times a year or you could end up with a great hunter that will be a good family pet only a few times a year.

Pup chewing
Pups put everything in their mouths and chew on things. Some pups are worse than others. If I remember correctly my last two pups quit chewing between 9 mos. and a year.

Dogs eating crap
Make sure the dog isn't digesting food poorly due to worms or some other intestinal disorder.

First gun
Gun safety first .. We're in our fifties now but my two brothers and I weren't allowed to carry a gun until we had completed the gun safety course. We were allowed to start hunting birds at age 12, large game at age 14. I went on a number of hunting trips too young to carry a gun but enjoyed them no...

Funniest hunting story involving a dog
I'll start... A couple of years ago we were pheasant hunting in the Dakotas. It was early fall and the weather was beautifully sunny with morning dew. The GSPs were about 3 1/2 years old and were working very well. A cattail slough was the target at the moment. As you all know pheasants tend to sit ...

Pick a pup
I don't think much of generalizations about any particular breed. There's variation within each breed and variation between pups in the same litter. I think you get the point that regardless of the breed what you're trying to do is increase the odds of getting what you want by looking for parents th...

Re: new pup decision
[ I like the idea that Setters are slightly smaller and less high-strung than the GSP. The breed standards for Setters are: M -25-26", 70-80 lbs., F - 24-25", 45-60 lbs. , for GSPs: M -23"-25", 55-70 lbs., F - 21-23", 45-60 lbs. As you can see the breed standards are similar with standard ES males b...

Re: hmm
if he pays me to deliver them, wut is that? Now there is nothing wrong with you delivering his dogs and he splits expense's. The easiest way to split expenses if you decide to go that route is: 2008 IRS allowable mileage rate of $0.505/mile x miles driven= allowable transporatation cost for gas, ca...

Congrats - With your first post I saw you were from MI so I had a sneaking suspicion that was the gun you just acquired. ...slow computer updates! I have no use for a 28 ga. myself but I understand lots of people have a soft spot for'em.

According to my local Gander Mountain store as of noon today the computer still shows one more Verona 28 gauge, 28" VR in Grandville, MI. Gander had a gun clearance sale through last Sat. (Sat. was their fiscal year end). The price in the computer is now $699.97. No, I'm not a Gander employee.

Others are more familiar with DOT regs. However the definition of "for hire" is critical. For example; sharing all costs or expenses incuding reasonable overhead may exempt you from the regs. If you make a profit over and above your direct expenses, vehicle depreciation and reasonable overhead likel...

Proper porcupine quill removal
When my 6 y.o. GSP was 1 1/2 she got into her first and only (knock on wood) porcupine while hunting. The situation was not bad enough to require a vet. My hunting partner held her on the ground in a bear hug while I removed the quills with a Leatherman. Later, another hunting and fishing buddy said...

Beeper Control
Not to highjack the thread but ... I use a TT, G2 Upland with the beeper accessory. I use it mostly on range/point as we hunt lots of cattail sloughs. My options are to turn the beeper off remotely or listen to the periodic beep and the hawk scream when the GSP is on point. I can keep the beeper on ...

Hi! I've tapped into the Forum off and on for the past year, what an excellent resource. I own a 5 1/2 y.o. GSP female athlete, a gift from the "Wagonmaster". I hunt birds and big game in MN. & N.D., primarily with my two brothers, four sons and nephews. A sister-in-law, niece, a few friends and one...

These days when going on an out of town bird hunting trip I always bring at least 2 guns, usually Beretta 391 semi-autos in 20 & 12 ga. because they both fit me well. The first gun I bought with my own money was a used Winchester SxS 12 ga. I purchased when I was 12 years old for $80. I lugged it ev...
