Re: Newbie with an 8 week old GSP
If you've already had your Vet visit for micro-chipping and shots I'd start working on getting your puppy officially registered with the AKC. The sooner you do, the better so you don't accidentally forget, lose the paperwork or the breeder decides to disappear. Once its registered you can enter him ...

Re: Advice- a solid gun dog AND house pet
Our dogs are taught a release signal to let them know it's time to shove it on down into overdrive. I use this method. When inside, calm. If he goes stupid he gets a time out in his crate for 5 minutes so he can calm down some. When out walking, he's expected to be at heel on command even when the ...

Honda CR-V with AWD with 65k miles. I've never gotten it stuck and there's room for the dog, hunting and camping gear. Some days I wish it had a little more power so I could tow a 4000 lbs travel trailer but with it being paid off and getting 24 mpg I can't complain to much. I'll look into something...

Re: Pointing dog advise
No one has suggested it yet but it is another option for the frigid northern lands, a pointing lab. It won't have the range or energy of a pointer but shouldn't mind the cold weather very much. Low to medium energy in doors and generally loves everyone. You'll have to be sure to look into a field li...

Hi I am fairly new here. Actually, don't even have a dog yet, never owned one or been around one long enough to say so my entire 32yrs of life so far but I wanted a GSP so I'm in the process of looking...again. I have never been to a field trial. Like many it is just a matter of not knowing anything about them or where they are being held. So I got a phone call from a friend that said a local field trialer was putting on a no sanctioned fun trial at his place this weekend. So I say why not. I went and the...

I contacted the NRA about this issue since it is exactly what they are suppose to try and prevent. Apparently they know about it and are currently working to get this ruling over turned.

I've read that some people don't like pointing labs? I was just curious what are the pros and cons of hunting with a pointing lab, and why some people don't like them. Again, I'm just curious as to people's opinions. I depends on what you want from your pointer. Labs don't generally have the energy...

I agree with your approach. Hit the basics first and move on as they remember how to do old tricks. Since your taking the effort to retrain, you can also take this opportunity to fine tune your training in areas you know that need working on. Also don't feel bad about having to do a refresher, its c...

My dogs are not Steady to shot and fall. I don't want them that way. I prefer my dogs to be on top of that rooster the second it hits the ground. I had some similar issues with my new dog, he's about the same age as yours. He didn't really know manners or most commands when he came to my home. In addition to the slow eating bowl, another way to slow them down is to add water. It helps keep them hydrated during hunting season and slows down their eating. I feed mine 2c of food w/ 4c of water. That sounds like a really good idea. I've been trying to figure out how to get my dog to hydrate ...

There are a lot of anti-gun people out there that have given up on legislating gun-control so now they're trying to use the agencies and other back door methods to restrict gun usage. The fact that they're using the Department of Fish and Game just makes me even more angry about what they're doing.

You just reminded of probably the more important thing. Look for a shotgun that takes choke tubes. They also make shotguns that take choke barrels but they're much more expensive to gather a set for. You'll want the different chokes for varying your shot pattern.

Use smaller sized dog food. The smaller bites makes them take longer to slurp up and since they're already small, there's less of a chance it getting stuck on the way down.

For pheasant and quail you can't go wrong with a 12ga. I know some people that like the smaller 20ga because its lighter than a 12ga. In California for bird hunting your not allowed more than 2+1 shells in your gun. If you have a O/U its not issue, with a pump or semi-auto you'll need to block the m...
